Holmoe Looks for Quick Offensive Line Hire
BERKELEY, Calif.--Cal head coach Tom Holmoe said Monday he expected to name a new offensive line coach within the next several days.
The vacancy on Cal's staff was created on Monday when Tom Cable accepted a position as an offensive line coach at Colorado. Cable has been on Cal's staff for the past six years, working under Keith Gilbertson, Steve Mariucci and Tom Holmoe.
"I really enjoyed my time here at Cal and grew a lot as a coach," said Cable. "After six years, the timing felt right for me to make a change and experience some new horizons. I want to eventually become a head coach and I believe this move to Colorado will help me achieve some of my goals.
"I will always have a fond place in my heart for the program here at Cal and feel that the program is in fine shape for a lot of success."
Holmoe said that he has already received calls from nearly a dozen established offensive line coaches around the country who want the Cal job.
"It's really been an amazing phenomenon," said Holmoe. "Maybe it's the timing, but we have some great candidates, some coaches who are extremely highly regarded.
"I wish Tom every bit of success in his career and thank him for all his hard work. We're sorry to see him go, but we're pretty excited about the chance to bring in a great coach and feel like we'll be able to move very quickly because of the interest in the job."
One of the major downsides to the departure of Cable was the announcement last week that center Jeremy Newberry has decided to forego his senior year and enter the NFL draft.
The second team Pac-10 selection said he was originally planning to stay for his senior year, but that when Cable left, he also decided to change his plans. Because of the NFL deadline for early draft entry, Newberry did not have the option to wait a short time and make a decision after the announcement of Cal's new offensive line coach.
