Bears Earn All-America Honors
IOWA CITY, Iowa - The California Golden Bears continued their impressive run taking home five All-America awards after the completion of individual event finals at Carver Hawkeye Arena, Saturday, April 19.
The Bears struck early in the evening when freshman Andrew Hampy posted a career-best 9.80 taking second place on the floor. Hampy defeated 1996 U.S. Olympian Blaine Wilson, among other in this his first trip to NCAAs. Floor did prove to be a costly event for the Bears as Oleg Kosiak, who qualified for the finals on P-bars and H-bar in addition to floor, suffered a sprained ankle during his routine and was forced to withdraw from the remainder of the competition.
Cal's Evgenii Zherbchevskiy finished in seventh place on both rings and P-bars, just missing out on All-American honors awarded to the top six finishers in each event.
In the vault rotation, Trent Wells made his first appearance of the night, but was unable to pull of the landing, scoring a 9.200 to take ninth in the nation. Wells, however, rebounded in the P-bars and H-bar competition. On P-bars, Wells posted a 9.812 to finish in third and followed that performance with a 9.775 on H-bar, earning a share of second place with teammate David Kruse.
The night marked the end of the Call careers for both Kruse and Wells. Over the years, the duo combined for nine All-America awards. In 1996, Kruse received All-America recognition on floor, vault, H-bar and in the all-around to go with his 1997 honors on H-bar and once again in the all-around. Wells repeated his All-American performance of last year on the P-bars and earned the nod on H-bar in 1997.
