No. 2 Men's Gymnastics Off to a Strong Start
SAN JOSE, Calif. - The Cal men's gymnastics team began the 1997 season
with wins over Stanford, UC Santa Barbara and San Jose State at the Spartan Open
on Friday in San Jose. Oleg Kosiak, a 1996 Olympic bronze medalist from Ukraine
paced the Bears to a 228.150 score while accumulating an individual total of
57.250 en route to the all-around championship. The Bears closest competition
came from Stanford , which finished with a total of 218.650 despite a strong
showing from Keith Wiley who finished second in the all-around just 0.150 behind
Kosiak.
Cal's strength was in its depth as all four of the Bear all-arounders
finished in the top five. Evgenii Zherebchevskiy finished the all-around in third
while David Kruse and Trent Wells rounded out the top five. Cal will be well
represented in the in the individual event finals Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
