Bears Win National Championship
IOWA CITY, Iowa - The California Golden Bears won the NCAA Men's Gymnastic National Championship with a record-setting performance of 233.825, Friday, April 18 at Carver Hawkeye Arena. The Bears beat strong teams from Oklahoma (232.725) and Iowa (231.800) en route to its title. Cal's score eclipsed it own record of 233.400 for highest point total in NCAA competition as well as its mark of 233.15 set at the NCAA West Regionals for highest total in NCAA Championship history.
"If we'd have opened the door one of the other teams would have walked through," head coach Barry Weiner said. "But, I knew that if all three teams hit we would win and that is exactly what happened. It was a great effort from a great team."
After leading in the early going, the Bears began to pull away from the Sooners and Hawkeyes in the second and final rotation. On vault, Cal's weakest event, the team posted a 38.950, the highest mark in school history. Cal moved to P-Bars and recorded the second-highest total in Cal history with its 39.075, before finishing off the competition with a usually strong H-bar routine which scored 39.125.
From an individual standpoint, Cal gymnasts set or equaled eight career high's on the night. On floor, Trent Wells did the honors with 9.850. Kruse added marks of 9.725 on horse and a 9.550 on rings. But the Bears did the most damage on vault with Alex Chansky, Gerwin Sincharoen, Kruse, Josh Birckelbaw, and Wells each posting best marks.
On Saturday, April 19, Kruse, Oleg Kosiak, Wells, Evgenii Zherebchevskly and Andrew Hampy will compete in the individual event finals.
The National Championship meet will be aired by ESPN on a taped delay basis. It is scheduled to be shown on May 12, at 9:30 p.m. PDT.
