Bears Travel to Reno to Face Nevada Wolf Pack

LAST WEEK:
Two weeks ago the California Golden Bears, (1-0), defeated the Pacific Tigers, 169-89, Oct. 4 in Stockton. The Bears, lead by junior Marylyn Chiang (The Pas, Manitoba, Canada) and freshman Hanna Jaltner (Vaxjo, Sweden), won eight of the meet's 14 events. Chiang won the 500 free (5:14.40) and the 400 IM (4:29.37), while Jaltner took the 100 (1:04.00) and the 200 breast (2:27.60).
HEAD COACH TERI MCKEEVER:
Teri McKeever is in her sixth season as Cal's head women's swim coach. McKeever has a 42-25 (.626) dual meet record with the Golden Bears and a 96-47 (.671) overall record (five years as women's coach at Fresno State). She has led Cal to a 15th place NCAA finish in 1993, a 21st place finish in 1994, a 28th place finish in 1995, a 17th place finish in 1996 and a ninth place finish in 1997.
NOTING NEVADA:
The Nevada Wolf Pack captured nine out of 10 events in the Pacific Relay Invitational last Friday, and performed well at the Pacific Invitational Saturday in Stockton, CA. The Wolf Pack, which won 11 of 13 races Saturday, was led by senior Lise' Mackie, a freestyler and IMer, who won five individual events--the 200 IM, 200 free, 100 breast, 100 free and 200 fly. Sophomore Laura Bartle also swam well, winning the 500 free, 50 free and 100 fly. Last season, Nevada took the Big West Conference title for the second year in a row and finished with a 6-3 dual meet record. Mackie is the Wolf Pack's top returner, placing 10th in the 200 IM (2:00.33) at the 1997 NCAA meet.
BEAR NOTES:
Cal returns six All-Americans this season--junior Chiang, sophomore Elli Overton, sophomore Waen Minpraphal, sophomore Anya Kolbisen, sophomore Nicole Omphroy and junior Kristin Imwalle. Chiang had one of the best NCAA meets in Cal history last year, placing second in the 100 back with a school record 53.29, third in the 200 back (1:56.30) and fourth in the 200 IM with a school record 1:58.81. She also swam the backstroke leg of the Bears 400 medley relay team, which set a school record with a time of 3:43.50.
Chiang was named team MVP for the second year in a row. Overton, a member of the Australian National team and a two-time Olympian, joined the Bears last January and earned All-America honors by placing fourth in the 400 IM at the NCAAs with a school record 4:13.06. She also placed sixth in the 200 IM (1:59.82), swam the breaststroke leg of Cal's 400 medley relay and anchored the 800 free relay. Overton has been selected as one of the Bears team captains this season.
Minpraphal, a two-time Olympian as a member of the Thailand National team, swam the butterfly leg on the 400 medley relay and earned honorable mention All-America honors, placing 10th at the NCAA meet in the 200 fly. Kolbisen earned All-America honors as a member of the Bears 800 free relay, which placed seventh at the NCAAs. She was also a member of Cal's 400 free relay (10th at the NCAAs) and was named the team's Most Improved Swimmer.
Omphroy was a member of all of Cal's relay teams at the NCAA meet and swam the freestyle leg on the 400 medley relay. She earned All-America honors on the Bears 800 free relay. Imwalle is an outstanding distance freestyler who earned honorable mention All-America honors as a freshman in 1996, competing in the 800 free relay and swimming the breaststroke leg on the 400 medley relay.
