Bears Travel to Seattle for Tri-Meet
Cal Takes on Washington, Washington State and Oregon State

LAST WEEK: The California women's swim team improved to 2-0 on the season with a 164-136 dual meet victory Oct. 25 at Nevada. The Bears won eight individual events in Reno, including three by sophomore Elli Overton (Sydney, Australia) and two by freshman Hanna Jaltner (Vaxjo, Sweden). Overton, a 1992 and '96 Olympian from Australia, captured the 100 back (56.26), 500 free (5:01.07) and 200 IM (2:06.16). Jaltner, a newcomer who competed in the '96 Atlanta Olympics for Sweden, placed first 100 (1:03.32) and 200 breast (2:23.10). Other winners for Cal included junior Marylyn Chiang (The Pas, Manitoba, Canada) in the 100 fly (56.06), junior Kristin Imwalle (Bend, OR) in the 1000 free (10:41.28) and sophomore Waen Minpraphal (Bangkok, Thailand) in the 200 fly (2:03.93). Three weeks ago the Bears defeated Pacific, 169-89, Oct. 4 in Stockton. Against Pacific, Cal was led by Chiang and Jaltner and won eight of the meet's 14 events. Chiang captured the 500 free (5:14.40) and the 400 IM (4:29.37), while Jaltner took the 100 (1:04.00) and the 200 breast (2:27.60). Jaltner has been impressive so far for the Bears, winning the 100 and 200 breast in Cal's first two dual meets of the season.
HEAD COACH TERI MCKEEVER: Teri McKeever is in her sixth season as Cal's head women's swim coach. McKeever has a 43-25 (.632) dual meet record with the Golden Bears and a 97-47 (.674) overall record (five years as women's coach at Fresno State). She has led Cal to a 15th place NCAA finish in 1993, a 21st place finish in 1994, a 28th place finish in 1995, a 17th place finish in 1996 and a ninth place finish in 1997.
NOTING WASHINGTON, WASHINGTON STATE, OREGON STATE: This weekend will mark the start of the dual meet season for Washington, Washington State and Oregon State. Last season, Washington placed seventh (478.0), Washington State eighth (322.0) and Oregon State ninth (243.0) at the 1997 Pac-10 Championship in Federal Way, WA. Cal has hosted a tri-meet involving Washington State and Oregon State the past four seasons, including last year when the Bears defeated Washington State, 195-65, and Oregon State, 218-43, Oct. 25 at Spieker Aquatics Complex.
BEAR NOTES: Cal returns six All-Americans this season--Chiang, Overton, Minpraphal, Imwalle, sophomore Anya Kolbisen and sophomore Nicole Omphroy. Chiang had one of the best NCAA meets in Cal history last year, placing second in the 100 back with a school record 53.29, third in the 200 back (1:56.30) and fourth in the 200 IM with a school record 1:58.81. She also swam the backstroke leg of the Bears 400 medley relay team, which set a school record with a time of 3:43.50. Chiang was named team MVP for the second year in a row. Overton joined the Bears last January and earned All-America honors by placing fourth in the 400 IM at the NCAAs with a school record 4:13.06. She also placed sixth in the 200 IM (1:59.82) and has been selected as one of the Bears team captains this season. Minpraphal, a two-time Olympian as a member of the Thailand National team, earned honorable mention All-America honors, placing 10th at the NCAA meet in the 200 fly. Kolbisen earned All-America honors as a member of the Bears 800 free relay, which placed seventh at the NCAAs. She was named the team's Most Improved Swimmer. Omphroy earned All-America honors on the Bears 800 free relay and Imwalle earned honorable mention All-America honors as a freshman in 1996, competing in the 800 free relay and swimming the breaststroke leg on the 400 medley relay.
