No. 15 Ranked Bears Travel to No. 6 Arizona and No. 21 Arizona State

Last Week: In the No. 15 ranked California women's swim team's (12-0) last competition, the Golden Bears upset No. 5 ranked Michigan, 170-130, Jan. 12 at Spieker Aquatics Complex. After Michigan won the meet's first three races, Cal proceeded to capture 11 of the next 13 events for the victory. Sophomore newcomer Elli Overton (Sydney, Austrailia) was a triple winner for the Bears, placing first in the 200 IM (2:04.11), and the 100 (56.88) and 200 back (2:03.58). Cal also had outstanding performances from freshman Anya Kolbisen (Half Moon Bay, CA) and junior diver Bobbi Hamilton (Dryden, NY). Kolbisen won the 50 (24.13) and 100 free (52.65). Hamilton placed first in both the one meter (245.25) and three meter (265.65) diving competition. The Bears also won the 800 free relay (7:32.70 Kolbisen, Nicole Omphroy, Waen Minpraphal, Overton), and freshman Waen Minpraphal (Bangkok, Thailand), sophomore Kristin Imwalle (Bend, OR) and freshman Amy Simpson (Visalia, CA) were individual winners. Minpraphal won the 200 fly (2:05.29), Imwalle won the 500 free (5:02.34) and Simpson took the 100 fly (58.06). Sophomore star Marylyn Chiang (The Phe Pas, Manitoba, Canada), has already won 19 races this season and has NCAA Consideration marks in the 50 free (23.59), 100 free (51.10), 200 free (1:49.69), 100 back (55.55), 200 back (2:00.98) and 200 IM (2:02.36). Junior divers Danielle Duris (Sacramento, CA) and Bobbi Hamilton have both qualified for the Zone Diving Championships, March 14-15 at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, CO. Duris and Hamilton are the first Cal women divers to qualify for the Zone Championships since Melissa Graviss in 1992.
Head Coach Teri Mckeever: Teri McKeever is in her fifth season as Cal's head women's swim coach. McKeever has a 40-21 (.656) dual meet record with the Golden Bears and a 94-43 (.686) overall record (five years as women's coach at Fresno State). She has led Cal to a 15th place NCAA finish in 1993, a 21st place finish in 1994, a 28th place finish in 1995 and a 17th place finish in 1996.
Noting Arizona, Arizona State: The No. 6 ranked Arizona Wildcats are coming off a 140-92 victory over Northern Arizona Jan. 18 in Tucson. Arizona will be led by senior Ashley Tappin, who was third at the 1996 NCAA Championship in the 100 fly and has her team's top times in the 50 free (22.66), 100 free (49.74), 100 back (54.79) and 100 fly (54.30). Last year the Wildcats finished sixth at the NCAA Championship. Cal has an 11-2 career dual meet record versus Arizona, losing the last match-up, 155-89, Jan. 21, 1995 in Tucson. The No. 21 ranked Arizona State Sun Devils are 6-3 in dual meets this season, but have fallen to Pac-10 competition UCLA Nov. 15 (140-100) and USC Nov. 16 (207-91). The Sun Devils will face No. 1 ranked Stanford Friday before taking on the Bears. Arizona State will be led by freshman Carolyn Adel, who currently leads her team in the 200 free (1:50.99), 500 free (4:56.07), 200 fly (2:06.56), 200 IM (2:04.10) and 400 IM (4:20.58). Last year the Sun Devils were 23rd at the NCAA Championship. Cal has a 5-9-1 career dual meet record versus Arizona State, losing the last match-up, 189-111, Jan. 20, 1995 in Tempe.
Noting The Bears: The Bears feature a squad heavy with underclassmen--including three seniors, three juniors, six sophomores and 12 freshmen. Cal's 12 dual meet victories in 1996-97 already surpasses the Bears victories last season (9-5) is the most single-season wins in school history.
