LAST WEEK: The Bears (12-2) fell to No. 5 ranked Arizona (157-85) and No. 21 ranked Arizona State (175-125) last weekend in Arizona. Top performers for Cal included sophomore newcomer Elli Overton (Sydney, Austrailia), freshman Waen Minpraphal (Bangkok, Thailand), sophomore Marylyn Chiang (The Phe Pas, Manitoba, Canada), freshman Jenni Brelsford (Fresno, CA) and junior diver Bobbi Hamilton (Dryden, NY). Overton placed first in the 400 IM (4:20.62) versus Arizona and won the 200 back (2:03.26) and 200 IM (2:03.02) against Arizona State. She already has NCAA Consideration times in the 100 and 200 back, and 200 and 400 IM this season. Minpraphal won the 200 fly with a time of 2:06.68 last Friday against Arizona and came back and won the 200 fly with a time of 2:03.98 versus Arizona State. She has an NCAA consideration time of 2:03.73 in the 200 fly. One of the Bears top swimmers is Chiang, who captured the 100 back at Arizona State (57.00), and has already won 20 races this season and has NCAA consideration marks in the 50 free (23.59), 100 free (51.10), 200 free (1:49.69), 100 back (55.55), 200 back (2:00.98) and 200 IM (2:02.36). Brelsford placed first in the 100 breast (1:05.86) and Hamilton won the one meter diving competition (256.35) at Arizona State. Junior divers Danielle Duris (Sacramento, CA) and Hamilton have both qualified for the Zone Diving Championships, March 14-15 at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, CO. Duris and Hamilton are the first Cal women divers to qualify for the Zone Championships since Melissa Graviss in 1992.

HEAD COACH TERI MCKEEVER: Teri McKeever is in her fifth season as Cal's head women's swim coach. McKeever has a 40-23 (.635) dual meet record with the Golden Bears and a 94-45 (.676) overall record (five years as women's coach at Fresno State). She has led Cal to a 15th place NCAA finish in 1993, a 21st place finish in 1994, a 28th place finish in 1995 and a 17th place finish in 1996.

NOTING USC and UCLA: The No. 4 ranked USC Trojans are 6-0 in dual meets this season. The Trojans are led by senior Kristine Quance, who was named the 1996 Pac-10 and NCAA Swimmer of the Year, capturing NCAA titles in the 200 breast (2:09.57), 200 IM (1:57.58) and 400 IM (4:06.66). Last year, USC finished fourth at the NCAA Championship. Cal has an 8-9 career dual meet record versus the Trojans, losing the last match-up, 183-71, Jan. 27, 1996 in Los Angeles. The No. 10 ranked UCLA Bruins are 6-0 in dual meets this season and will face No. 1 ranked Stanford before taking on the Bears. The Bruins are led by junior Lindsay Etter, who is undefeated in the 100 and 200 breaststrokes in dual meet competition this season. Etter also set a new UCLA Men's Gym Pool record in the 200 breast (2:16.07) versus Arizona State and Florida Nov. 15. Last year, UCLA finished 11th at the NCAA Championship. Cal has a 5-10 career dual meet mark against the Bruins, losing the last match-up, 209-89, Jan. 26, 1996 in Los Angeles.

NOTING THE BEARS: The Bears feature a squad heavy with underclassmen--including three seniors, three juniors, six sophomores and 12 freshmen. Cal's 12 dual meet victories in 1996-97 already surpasses the Bears victories last season (9-5) is the most single-season wins in school history.
