Austrailian Olympic Swimmer Elli Overton will Join Cal
Elli Overton, a top Austrialian swimmer who competed in the 1992 Barcelona and the 1996
Atlanta Olympic Games, will be attending the University of California this January and
will be competing for the Golden Bears, it was announced by head coach Teri McKeever.
"Elli is an excellent individual medley swimmer who will fit into the mode of the team
nicely," said McKeever. "She brings a lot of diversity to the squad with her ability to
compete in several different events, and she will elevate the level of the team's
training as she obviously has a tremendous work ethic. Elli attending Cal is a very
significant plus for our program, and the team is really excited about her coming to
Berkeley."
Overton, 22, will be a sophomore eligibility-wise, having competed in the '92 Olympics
and placing fifth in the 200-meter IM. In the Atlanta Olympics, she was again fifth in
the 200-meter IM (2:14.68) and placed 14th in both the 100-meter backstroke (1:02.27)
and the 400 IM (4:44.00). Overton was also the 1995 Short Course (meters) World Champion
in the 200 IM (2:10.50), held in Rio de Janeiro.
