No. 12 Ranked Bears Host No. 1 Ranked Stanford at Spieker

BEAR NOTES: The Bears (13-3) fell to No. 4 ranked USC
(195-107) Jan. 31, but rebounded to top No. 11 ranked UCLA by one point,
150.5 to 149.5 Feb. 1 at Spieker Aquatics Complex. It was the first time
Cal had defeated the Bruins since 1991. The Bears were led by sophomores
Marylyn Chiang (The Phe Pas, Manitoba, Canada) and Elli Overton (Sydney,
Austrailia). Chiang won both the 100 (56.62) and 200 back (2:02.02), as
well as the 100 fly (55.27). Overton dominated the 200 free (1:52.01)
and the 400 IM (4:22.22). Freshman Waen Minpraphal (Bangkok, Thailand)
also captured the 200 fly (2:03.58) for the Bears. It was the second big
win for Teri McKeever's squad this season. On Jan. 12 at Spieker
Aquatics Complex, Cal defeated No. 5 ranked Michigan, 170-130. The Bears
13-3 dual meet record is also the most single-season dual meet wins in
school history. In the USC meet, Overton placed first in the 100 breast
(1:04.03) and Minpraphal won the 100 fly (56.70). Overton already has
NCAA consideration times in the 100 back (56.76), 100 breast (1:04.03),
200 IM (2:03.02) and 400 IM (4:2062) this season. Minpraphal has NCAA
consideration times in the 100 fly (56.69), 200 fly (2:03.58) and 400 IM
(4:22.80). Chiang has already won 22 races this season and has NCAA
consideration marks in the 50 free (23.59), 100 free (51.10), 200 free
(1:49.69), 100 back (55.55), 200 back (2:00.98) and 200 IM (2:02.36).
Other NCAA consideration times for the Bears include freshman Nicole
Omphroy (Clovis, CA) in the 200 free (1:51.09) and freshman Margo
Diamond (Briar Cliff Manor, NY) in the 200 fly (2:03.74). Junior divers
Danielle Duris (Sacramento, CA) and Bobbi Hamilton (Dryden, NY) have
both qualified for the Zone Diving Championships, March 14-15 at the Air
Force Academy in Colorado Springs, CO. Duris and Hamilton are the first
Cal women divers to qualify for the Zone Championships since Melissa
Graviss in 1992. The Bears feature a squad heavy with
underclassmen--including three seniors, three juniors, six sophomores
and 11 freshmen.
HEAD COACH TERI MCKEEVER: Teri McKeever is in her fifth
season as Cal's head women's swim coach. McKeever has a 41-24 (.630)
dual meet record with the Golden Bears and a 95-46 (.673) overall record
(five years as women's coach at Fresno State). She has led Cal to a 15th
place NCAA finish in 1993, a 21st place finish in 1994, a 28th place
finish in 1995 and a 17th place finish in 1996.
NOTING STANFORD: The Stanford women's swim team, undefeated
with a 9-0 dual meet record this season and winners of the past five
NCAA Championships, are led by freshman Catherine Fox, winner of two
gold medals in the 1996 Altanta Olympic Games in the 400 medley and
freestyle relays. The Cardinal are also led by senior Claudia Franco,
five-time NCAA champion and 19-time Alll-American. The team is comprised
of nine returning All-Americans and five 1996 NCAA champions, including
Elin Austevoll (200 medley, 400 free and 800 free relay champion) and
nine-time All-American Sarah Anderson. Cal has a 2-21 career mark
against Stanford and last fell to the Cardinal, 244-56, Jan. 27, 1996 in
Los Angeles.
