Cardinal. Chiang won her 23rd race of the season by capturing the 200
IM (2:05.29) and Overton won both the 200 breast (2:17.02) and the 100

Bobbi Hamilton (Dryden, NY) have both qualified for the Zone Diving
Championships, March 14-15 at the Air Force Academy in Colorado
Springs, CO. Duris and Hamilton are the first Cal women divers to
qualify for the Zone Championships since Melissa Graviss in 1992. Team
highlights for the Bears include defeating No. 11 ranked UCLA by one
point, 150.5 to 149.5 Feb. 1 at Spieker Aquatics Complex. It was the
first time Cal had defeated the Bruins since 1991. It was the second
big win for Teri McKeever's squad this season. On Jan. 12 at Spieker
Aquatics Complex, Cal defeated No. 5 ranked Michigan, 170-130. The
Bears 13-4 dual meet record is also the most single-season dual meet
wins in school history. The Bears feature a squad heavy with
underclassmen--including three seniors, three juniors, six sophomores
and 12 freshmen.
HEAD COACH TERI MCKEEVER: Teri McKeever is in her fifth season
as Cal's head women's swim coach. McKeever has a 41-25 (.621) dual
meet record with the Golden Bears and a 95-47 (.669) overall record
(five years as women's coach at Fresno State). She has led Cal to a
15th place NCAA finish in 1993, a 21st place finish in 1994, a 28th
place finish in 1995 and a 17th place finish in 1996.
NOTING THE PAC-10 CHAMPIONSHIPS: The Bears will be competing
against No. 1 ranked Stanford, No. 5 USC, No. 6 Arizona, No.11 UCLA
and No. 23 Arizona State at the Pac-10 Championship. Stanford, 10-0 in
dual meets this season and winners of the past five NCAA and 10 Pac-10
Championships, are led by freshman Catherine Fox, winner of two gold
medals in the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games in the 400 medley and
freestyle relays. USC, which placed third last year at the Pac-10
meet, will be led by 1996 Pac-10 and NCAA swimmer of the year,
Kristine Quance, who captured the NCAA titles in the 200 breast, 200
IM, and the 400 IM. UCLA, which placed second last year, is led by
breaststroker Linsay Etter and the 200 free relay team of Keiko Price,
Jill Jenkins, Susan Trainer and Jaclyn Castellano, which is ranked
fourth in the nation. Arizona's Ashley Tappin will attempt to reclaim
the Pac-10 title in the 200 free, as well as anchor the defending NCAA
Champion free relay team. Preliminaries will begin at 11 a.m. and
finals will begin at 6 p.m. daily. Results of each session will be
posted on the Pac-10 Faxback system, (503) 614-4044, and the document
number is 2452. For the diving competition, the document number is
2353.
