Bears Travel to Texas

LAST WEEK:
The California women's swim team (5-0) dominated the Invitational Quadrangular against Washington, Washington State and Oregon State in its last competition Oct. 31-Nov. 1 in Seattle, WA. The Bears captured 15 of the meet's 18 events, scoring 554 points, compared to Washington's 498 points, Washington State's 328 points and Oregon State's 105 points. Scored as dual meets, Cal defeated Washington, 237-95; Washington State, 262-70 and Oregon State, 147-35. Individually, the Bears were led by sophomore Elli Overton (Sydney, Austrailia), who won the 200 fly (2:02.25, NCAA consideration), 200 breast (2:16.53, NCAA consideration) and 400 IM (4:22.65, NCAA consideration). Freshman Haley Cope (Chico, CA) also performed well, winning the 100 (57.49) and 200 back (2:05.25). Other individual winners for Cal were junior Marylyn Chiang (The Pas, Manitoba, Canada) in the 200 IM (2:05.72), sophomore Nicole Omphroy (Clovis, CA) in the 100 free (52.79), sophomore Anya Kolbisen (Half Moon Bay, CA) in the 500 free (5:08.15), freshman Adrienne Mattos (Mountian View, CA) in the 50 free (24.03) and freshman Hanna Jaltner (Vaxjo, Sweden) in the 100 breast (1:03.72). The Bears also won the 400 medley relay (3:47.63, NCAA consideration), the 200 free relay (1:37.58), the 200 medley relay (1:45.98), the 800 free relay (7:45.57) and the 400 free relay (3:36.26).
HEAD COACH TERI MCKEEVER:
Teri McKeever is in her sixth season as Cal's head women's swim coach. McKeever has a 46-25 (.647) dual meet record with the Golden Bears and a 100-47 (.680) overall record (five years as women's coach at Fresno State). McKeever won her 100th overall career dual meet last week at the Invitational Quadrangular in Seattle, WA. She has led Cal to a 15th place NCAA finish in 1993, a 21st place finish in 1994, a 28th place finish in 1995, a 17th place finish in 1996 and a ninth place finish in 1997.
NOTING TEXAS AND TEXAS A&M:
The Texas Longhorns are 0-1 this season, losing to Southern Methodist, 197-102, Oct. 18 in Dallas. Last year, Texas finished 10th at the NCAA Championship. The Longhorns are lead by senior backstroker Darby Chang, who finished 10th in the 100 back (55.05) at the '97 NCAAs and this year has already made NCAA consideration time in the 100 back (56.67). In addition, senior freestyler/backstroker Tammie Spatz has also swam an NCAA consideration time in the 200 free (1:61.41). Texas also features two NCAA diving champions, senior Vera Ilyina and sophomore Laura Wilkinson. Ilyina, the 1997 NCAA Diver of the Year, won both the one and three-meter diving competitions at the '97 NCAAs, while Wilkinson placed third in the three-meter competition and won the NCAA platform title. Wilkinson also won the platform title at the U.S. World Championship Team Trials Oct. 31-Nov.1 in Athens, GA. The Bears have an 0-6 overall dual meet record against Texas, last falling to the Longhorns, 197-105, Feb. 4, 1994 in Berkeley. Texas A&M, 2-0 this season, tied for 26th last year at the NCAAs and finished with a 5-6 dual meet record. The Aggies are led by senior Stacie Karnes and sophomores Tracy Evans and Monica Stroman. Karnes placed eighth in the 200 fly (1:59.74) at the NCAAs last season, while Evans has a top time of 16:42.00 in the 1,650 free and Stroman has a best of 4:19.08 in the 400 IM. This will be the first meeting between Cal and Texas A&M.
BEAR NOTES:
Cal has already set two dual meet school records this season. Freshman Hanna Jaltner set the dual meet record in the 100 breast (1:03.22) Oct. 25 at Nevada, and the Bears 400 medley relay (Overton, Jaltner, Minpraphal, Chiang) set a dual meet record (3:47.63) against Washington, Washington State and Oregon State.
