No. 8-Ranked California Women's Swimming and Diving Defeats No. 22-Ranked Texas A&M, 177-121
AUSTIN, TEXAS-The No. 8 nationally-ranked California women's swimming and diving team won its meet against No. 22 Texas A&M, 177-121, Saturday night at the Jamail Texas Swimming Center in Austin, Texas.
The Beasr (7-0) won 12 of 16 events, including wins in the 100-yard freestyle, and both the 200-yard and 400-yard medley relays. Junior Marylyn Chiang led California with first place finishes in the 50-yard freestyle (23.61), an NCAA consideration time in the 100-yard freestyle (50.68), and an NCAA automatic time standard in the 100-yard butterfly (54.49). Chiang was also a member of the Bears winning 200-yard medley relay, comprised of Chiang, freshman Hanna Jaltner, sophomore Waen Minpraphal, and sophomre Katie Lowes.
Texas A&M (2-2) dominated the diving events, as it recorded1-2-3 sweeps in both the one-meter and three-meter springboards. On the three meter, freshman Sarah Law placed first (277.65), followed by senior Jodi Janssen (276.90) and sophomore Danielle Guarneri (275.95). All three divers now have qualified to dive at the NCAA Zone D Diving Regionals at the Jamail Texas Swimming Center in Austin, Mar. 13-14, 1998. Sophomore Tracey Evans swam to a first-place finish in the 1000-yard freestyle (10:07.26) and placed second in the 500-yard freestyle (4:56.01).
Also on Saturday night at Jamail Texas Swimming Center, Texas A&M fell to No. 11 Texas, 171-129.
