Cal's Overton Sets National Mark; Cal Women Lead in First Day of Speedo Cup
LONG BEACH, Calif. - California's Elli Overton recorded the fastest time in the country
with a 1:59.83 performance in the 200 individual medley at the 1997 Speedo Cup at Belmont
Plaza Pool, Wednesday.
Overton had the nation's second fastest time going into the meet, but topped SMU's
Martina Moravoca's time of 2:01.03. Overton shattered Summer Saunders's meet record
of 2:01.69 set in 1993.
Teammate Marylyn Chiang finished second in the same event with an NCAA consideration time
of 2:01.91, followed by Nevada's Lise Mackie with an NCAA consideration time of 2:02.60.
The California women's team leads after the first day of competition with a score of 359.5,
followed by Nevada with 347.0 and Brigham Young in third with a score of 185.5.
Stanford leads the men's side with a total of 413.0, ahead of California with 340.0 and
Brigham Young at 241.0.
