Bears Swimming and Diving Splits at Arizona State
TEMPE, Ariz.-- The fifth-ranked Cal men's swimming and diving team easily handeled No.
10 Arizona State 138.5-104.5 today. However, the news wasn't as good for the
15th-ranked women's team, as it was upset by the No. 21 Sun Devils in a
dual meet in Tempe, Ariz., at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center.
The men's team jumped in front early, a Bear swimmer winning the first two races. Then
ASU quickly struck back, a Sun Devil winning the next two. But when Cal's Gordon
Kozuli won the 200IM with a time of 1:50.91 (more than three seconds
faster than the second place finisher, the Bear's Ratapong Sirisanot)
Cal would never trail again, winning six of the next 10 races.
The women's team dug itself a hole that it wouldn't be able to
climb out of, dropping four of the first five races. Maylyn Chiang
(100 Back), Jenni Breisford (100 Breast) and Waen Minpraphal (200 Fly)
did their best to help keep the Bears alive, each wining their races, but ASU had too many weapons for
the Bears to contend with and held on for the upset victory.
Elli Overton was the only multiple-event individual winner for Cal, taking the 200 Back (2:03.26) and the 200 IM (2:03.02).
