Stanford Defeats Cal, 72-52

OAKLAND, Calif.-- Kristin Folkl headed a list of five players in double figures
with 16 points as the 12th-ranked Stanford Cardinal defeated the California
Golden Bears, 72-52, in front 3,125 fans at the Kaiser Arena Friday night.

The victory, which was the Stanford's ninth straight over the Bears,
improved the Cardinal to 6-4 overall, 3-0 in Pac-10 play.
California, which fell to 5-8 overall, 1-2 in the Pac-10 was led by a pair
of freshmen, Masa Radovic, who had 11 points, and Lauren Ashbaugh who added
10.
Stanford didn't waste any time building an early first half lead, jumping
out to a 15-4 advantage in the first five minutes of the game behind two
three-pointers from Melody Peterson. Cal pulled to within five at 23-18
after a 6-0 run but that's as close as the Bears would get as Stanford
rattled off 10 unanswered points late in the half to take a 41-27 lead into
the locker room at intermission.
Stanford out-rebounded Cal 23-10 in the first half as the Cardinal
dominance on the offensive boards was the key in the first half.
"I think we competed for most of the game," said Cal head coach Marianne
Stanley. "But I was disappointed in our defensive rebounding. We didn't
want (Olympia Scott) and (Heather) Owen to go off, and we were cognizant of
their inside play. But we just couldn't box out. They had 12 more rebounds
than we did at halftime. We just let them get too many second chance
points."
Things didn't get any better for Cal after halftime as Stanford held the
Bears without a bucket for the first five minutes of the second half. In
fact, Cal missed nine of its first 11 shots and could only manage four
points in the first 10 minutes. The Cardinal, meanwhile, didn't seem to be
suffering from the floor, and quickly pushed their lead to 21 at 51-30 with
a Peterson lay-up.
The game continued to get away from Cal and with five minutes remaining in
the contest, the Cardinal had pushed their lead to 30 points at 69-39. The
Bears closed out the game with a 14-3 run to cut the lead to its final
margin of 20 points at 72-52 as Kenya Corley and Courtney Johnson keyed the
Cal run with six and four points, respectively, over the game's final two
minutes.
"After our scoring drought ended on offense, I thought we played much
better," said Stanley. "But overall I thought we were far too tentative on
the offensive end overall."
Despite playing most of the second half with four fouls, Amber Lacey led
the Bears with six rebounds, while Radovic was team-high in assists with
four.
Cal gets a week off to prepare for its next contest, a Jan. 16 game at
UCLA. The game is scheduled to tip off at 7:00 p.m.
