Sue Phillips-Chargin, a former well-known San Francisco Bay Area high school coach, begins her first season as an assistant coach for the California women's basketball team.
Phillips-Chargin, 32, is widely regarded as an excellent motivator with a history of winning as a player and coach. She comes to Cal after spending eight seasons as head women's basketball coach at her alma mater, Archbishop Mitty High School in San Jose, where she compiled a 224-31 (.878) record. Phillips-Chargin guided the Monarchs to national and state prominence, winning two state championships, four Northern California titles and eight Central Coast Section crowns. Her responsibilities at Cal include overseeing recruiting and working with the guards' development.
Under Phillips-Chargin, Mitty won the California Division III state championship in 1995. In 1999, the Monarchs posted a 31-0 record and won its first Division I state title, earning Phillips-Chargin National Coach of the Year recognition by Student Sports Magazine.
In addition to Phillips-Chargin's success on the court at Mitty, she was a successful softball coach for the school over the last six seasons and taught mathematics. She has directed her softball team to the CCS championship game two of the previous three seasons, winning the section title in 1998.
Phillips-Chargin graduated from Mitty in 1986 and chose to play softball at Northwestern over basketball at Cal. A 1990 graduate of Northwestern with a degree in business administration, she was an All-Big Ten and all-region player for the Wildcats before returning to Mitty as a teacher and coach. She was inducted into the AMHS Athletic Hall of Fame in 1998 for her accomplishments as a three-sport athlete as a prep (basketball, softball and volleyball).
Sue and her husband, Marty, reside in Willow Glen.
