Boxx Earns Spot on U.S. National Softball Team

Former Cal catcher Gillian Boxx, who played for the Bears from 1992-95 and was a member of the 1996 U.S. Olympic softball team, has been selected to play on the U.S. team that will compete in the American Challenge Series this summer.

The series of games begins with a Bay Area appearance when the U.S. squad, which captured the gold medal in Atlanta last summer, will face Olympic silver medalist China in a doubleheader on Sunday, June 29 in Hayward. The United States will also meet the Chinese on June 30 in Fresno and July 2 in Sacramento.

The series then shifts to Oklahoma City July 4-6, pitting the United States against Australia.

The U.S. team features all but two Olympians from last summer: Dionna Harris and former Cal All-American pitcher Michele Granger, who recently gave birth to a daughter.

Boxx, a four-time All-American at Cal, owns several school records, including highest batting average for a season (.466) and most base hits in a career (274). Her career batting average of .369 is the second highest in Cal history. After spending 1996 with the U.S. Olympic team, she served as an assistant softball coach at Notre Dame this past spring.
