Bears Sweep Oregon State
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Holly Yost pitched two complete games,
including a 10-inning game one, and was 4-for-9 from the plate as
No. 23 California defeated Oregon State 5-4 and 5-2 in Pac-10
action Saturday. Yost also accounted for a pair of RBI.
The Bears scored all five of their runs in the second game in the
first two innings. Beaver starting pitcher Amy Warner lasted only
two-thirds of an inning before being lifted. Warner gave up five
hits and three runs. Cal first baseman Melanie McCart had an RBI
double in the first inning and four other players had singles.
Kirsten Drake delivered a two-run homer in the second inning, her
first home run of the year, off of relief pitcher Brooke
Hofstetter to conclude the scoring for Cal.
Oregon State managed eight hits, most of them in the late innings.
Shortstop Shelley Beringhele accounted for both runs with RBI
singles in the third and seventh innings. The Beavers stranded two
baserunners in each of the last three innings.
Game one was a wild affair that took nearly three hours to
complete. Oregon State appeared to have tied the game at 5-5, but
Jodi Chmielewski was called out on running out of the base path
after the Bears' third baseman Jennifer Parker threw over the
catcher's head in a play at the plate. OSU head coach Kirk Walker
protested the call at the time of the play and after the game. OSU
still had the bases loaded with two outs, but pinch-hitter
Courtney Stewart grounded out to first.
The Bears had their own controversial play in the top of the 10th.
Cal had one run across when Drake was called out on a tag at home
by Beaver catcher Heather Valenty. Drake appeared to be safe and
was ejected after bumping the home plate umpire while arguing the
call.
Oregon State came from behind to take a 2-1 lead in the opener on
Denise Gutierrez's and Chmielewski's RBI singles. Cal came back in
the fifth thanks to two crucial Beaver errors to score two
unearned runs. OSU managed to even the game in the sixth on a
lead-off home run by Tarrah Beyster, her 12th of the season.
Offensive stars for the day included Cal's Lisa Iancin (5-for-9,
two RBI), Chmielewski (4-for-8, two RBI), Heather Chinn (4-for-7)
and Gutierrez (3-for-7, one RBI).
The wins boosted Cal to 33-23 overall and 12-13 in the Pac-10.
Oregon State, which has lost five straight, fell to 29-32-1 and
6-19. The wins likely assured the Bears a trip to the NCAA
Tournament.
