Cal Splits Pair with Stanford in Softball
PALO ALTO, Calif. - Sophomore Holly Yost pitched a four-hitter and freshman second baseman Lisa Iancin knocked in the game-winning run in the top of the eighth inning to lead Cal to a 1-0 victory over Stanford in the first game of a doubleheader Wednesday. In the nightcap, Stanford (25-25-1) defeated Cal (30-22), 2-1.
Game one turned into a pitchers' duel between Yost and Stanford's Becky Blevins. The Bears had plenty of chances to score, but were unable to push across a run until the eighth inning. First baseman Melanie McCart singled and went to second on a sacrifice by Yost. After a passed ball moved McCart to third, Iancin singled to left for the RBI.
Yost, who improved to 23-16 on the year, scattered four hits and struck out six without walking a batter.
In the second game, Cal jumped on top in the first inning. Right fielder Kirsten Drake and designated player Jenny Ackley rapped back-to-back singles, and with two outs, Yost singled home Drake.
However, Stanford tied the score in the bottom of the inning on a solo home run by Kelly Wiginton. The Cardinal added another run in the second inning on four base hits, keyed by an RBI single by Dawn Kobata.
Cal had an opportunity to tie or take the lead in nearly every inning, but the Bears, who had nine hits, batted just 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position. Yost took the loss after pitching 3.1 innings, while McCart tossed 2.2 innings of no-hit relief.
Cal concludes its home schedule against No. 6 Washington Saturday at 1 p.m. on Strawberry Field
