UCLA Sweeps Cal Behind Nuveman and Ochoa
LOS ANGELES - No. 3 ranked UCLA swept No. 21 California 6-5
and 3-0 in a Pac-10 doubleheader at UCLA's Haston Stadium.
Down 5-4 in the seventh inning, freshman Stacey Nuveman provided a
dramatic finish for the Bruins in game one, blasting a two-run homer
to give UCLA (31-7, 11-3 Pac-10) a 6-5 victory.
With two out in the sixth inning of game two, senior Nicole Ochoa
drove Cal pitcher Holly Yost's full count offering to centerfield
with the bases loaded, scoring all three runners for a 3-0 victory.
Nuveman had her 28-game hitting streak ended in game two when she
went 0-for-1 with two walks, but she finished the afternoon 2-for-5 with
a home run and two RBI. Ochoa went 3-for-6 with two RBI, ending an
0-for-19 slump.
On the mound, senior B'Ann Burns (13-3) moved five victories closer
to Lisa Fernandez' UCLA career record of 93, notching her 88th
career win in game one. In game two, freshman Christa Williams
(11-3) grabbed her eighth straight victory and ninth shutout.
For the Golden Bears (23-18, 6-8), sophomore Yost (16-12) pitched
both games, allowing 21 total hits and eight earned runs.
Cal will next host Stanford on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Strawberrry
