No. 8 Cal Splits Pair with San Jose State
BERKELEY, Calif. -- Junior designated player Jenny Ackley slapped a bases-loaded single with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, scoring two runs and lifting No. 8 Cal to a 5-4 win over San Jose State in the second game of a doubleheader Sunday on Strawberry Field.
In the opener, the Spartans (1-1) upset the Bears (3-1), 6-3.
In that first game, San Jose State jumped on top with four runs in the second inning, keyed by a two-run single by shortstop Victoria Ruelas and an RBI single by first baseman Kara Kanney. Cal rallied for one run in the sixth on an RBI single by Ackley.
The Spartans, though, added two more runs in the seventh inning, scoring twice on a double to left field by right fielder Maya Garcia. The Bears narrowed the gap with two runs of their own in the bottom of the seventh, but pitcher Corina Lilly coaxed Jessica Parker to pop up to Ruelas to end the game.
In the nightcap, Cal scored three times in the first inning, on a hit-and-run single by second baseman Lisa Iancin and sacrifice flies by first baseman Melanie McCart and pitcher Holly Yost. After San Jose State scored once in the third inning, the Spartans took a 4-3 lead in the fifth on four consecutive hits, including RBI doubles by Ruelas and Kanney.
In the bottom of the seventh, Cal loaded the bases on a single, a throwing error by Spartan third baseman Lindsay Lewis and a hit batter. Ackley then blooped a ball that fell just in front of Garcia, giving the Bears the come-from-behind win.
