No. 8 Cal Splits Pair with No. 2 UCLA

BERKELEY, Calif. -- Junior first baseman Melanie McCart drove in five runs with a homer and a bases loaded double and sophomore right-hander Holly Yost tossed a three-hitter to lead eighth-ranked Cal to a 7-0 victory over No. 2 UCLA in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday on Strawberry Field.

In the second game, UCLA (6-4, 1-1) defeated Cal (6-4, 1-1), 11-1.

In the opener, the Bears jumped on top with two runs in the second inning on three walks and two singles. Freshman second baseman Lisa Iancin drove home the first run on a single, while sophomore catcher Megumi Takasaki picked up an RBI on a bases-loaded walk.

Cal scored twice more in the third on a single by Jenny Ackley and a home run to left field by McCart. The homer was the 20th of McCart's career (second this season), giving her the all-time school record and breaking the mark of 19 set by Pam Relnoehl from 1980-83.

McCart came up with a big hit once again in the sixth inning, this time with a bases loaded double to left-center field with two outs. All three runners scored.

Yost (4-2) did not give up a hit until the sixth inning and struck out four. UCLA pitcher Christa Williams, a member of the 1996 U.S. Olympic team, took the loss.

In the second game, Cal scored first on an RBI single by Yost in the bottom of the first inning. However, UCLA took the lead in the second inning on a two-run homer by catcher Julie Marshall. The Bruins added four more runs in both the third and fourth innings to cruise to the 11-1 victory.

B'Ann Burns gained the win on the five-hitter, while Yost took the loss for the Bears.
