No. 20 Cal Splits Pair with Oregon in Softball

BERKELEY, Calif. - Sophomore pitcher Holly Yost tossed a four-hitter and drove in two runs with a double to lead No. 20 California to a 4-0 victory over Oregon in the first game of a doubleheader at Strawberry Field Saturday. In the nightcap, Oregon (12-19-1, 1-3) outslugged Cal (21-16, 4-6), 13-8.

In the first game, the Bears scored three times in the first inning, keyed by Yost's double. Yost eventually came around to score on a wild pitch by Oregon's Jennie Cook. Cal added an insurance run in the third inning when right fielder Kirsten Drake doubled and scored on a single by first baseman Melanie McCart.

The second game featured 17 hits, four home runs, six errors, six hit batters and 12 walks. After Oregon scored twice in the first inning on a two-run homer by Heather Holte, the Bears tied the score in the second inning on a walk, two Oregon errors and an RBI single by catcher Megumi Takasaki. Cal took the lead at 3-2 on a solo home run by McCart in the third inning.

However, the Ducks exploded for six runs in the fourth inning, keyed by a pinch-hit grand slam by Jennifer Apfelbaum.

Cal answered with five runs in the bottom half of the inning. The Bears had only two hits, but took advantage of two hit batters and two walks to tie the score at 8-8.

In the fifth, Oregon regained the lead for good on a two-run homer by Cook. The Ducks then added three more runs in the sixth inning, capped by an RBI double by Jill Robinson.

Cal returns to action Sunday when the Bears host Oregon State at 1 p.m.
