No. 10 California Splits Pair with No. 15 Arizona State in Softball
BERKELEY, Calif. - Senior first baseman Melanie McCart drove in three runs with a double and a home run to lead 10th-ranked California to a 5-3 victory over No. 15 Arizona State in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday at Strawberry Field.
In the nightcap, ASU (9-4, 1-1) defeated the Bears (10-7, 2-2), 7-3.
In the first game, Cal scored four times in the first inning, knocking ASU starter Roxanne Tsosie out of the game. McCart doubled in the first two runs, and third baseman Jessica Parker and second baseman Lisa Iancin followed with RBI hits. After ASU closed the gap with a run in the second inning and two more in the sixth, McCart blasted her third homer of the season over the center field fence in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Sophomore Holly Yost scattered seven hits and struck out five to pick up the win.
In the second game, ASU jumped on top with single runs in the first and second innings. However, the Bears rallied for three runs in the fourth inning. Jenny Ackley doubled and scored on a double by Parker. Iancin then singled home Parker and came around to score two batters later on a wild pitch.
ASU retook the lead in the sixth inning with three runs, keyed by a two-run single by Raja Woods. The Sun Devils added two more runs in the seventh inning to put the game away.
