Arizona Beats California Twice to Open Pac-10 Softball Action

TUCSON, Ariz.- The top-ranked Arizona Wildcats (23-0) beat California (10-9) twice on Saturday, 4-3 and 4-1, to extend a school-record winning streak to 40 games.

Arizona broke a 1-1 tie in the sixth inning of the first game by scoring three runs, keyed by Leticia Pineda's two-run double and an RBI single by Lisa Pitt. Winner Carrie Dolan (11-0) gave up two hits in the top of the seventh, including a two-run home run by Cal's Melanie McCart, but induced a ground-out to end the game. She and loser Holly Yost (7-6) each pitched five hitters.

In game two, Arizona's Nancy Evans (12-0) also scattered five hits but Arizona was able to generate a little more offensively, collecting eight hits, but also used two Cal fielding errors to score runs. Nancy Evans and Leah Braatz-Cochrane had RBI singles. Yost, the designated player in the second game, drove in Cal's run wiuth a two-out single.

Arizona finished 1996 with 17 consecutive victories and has not lost this year. The Wildcats play Stanford (11-12 overall, 1-5 in league play) in a Pac-10 doubleheader at 1 p.m. Sunday. California will play Arizona State (12-4, 4-2) at 1 p.m. in Tempe.
