Bilbao Burns Cal from Both the Mound and the Plate
SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Iowa advanced to the semifinal game in the championship bracket of the Capital Classic, on Saturday, after downing The California Golden Bears 5-2. Iowa's Debbie Bilbao hurt the Bears from both the plate and the mound. She finished with a complete game on the mound giving up just two runs off of five hits. Along the way she fanned three Bear batters. She was awarded the win improving her record to 9-2 on the season. From the plate she batted 2-for-3 with a home run and 2 RBI.
Iowa used two run inning in the first and third innings to go up 4-1 going into the top of the fourth. Iowa made it 5-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning putting the game out of reach for the Bears.
Along with Bilbao, Lea Twig (2-for-3) and Christy Hebert (2-for-2, 2 doubles, 2 RBI) helped lead the charge for the Hawkeyes from the plate. Jessica Parker was the only Bear with multiple hits for the Bears. She finished 2-for-3 including a home run.
Cal's Holly Yost pitched six innings, but didn't fair as well as Bilbao. She surrendered five runs off of eight hits. She did manage to strike out three Hawkeye batters.

Cal Shutout by Kansas
SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The California softball team lost its second game of the day at the Capital Classic Saturday, losing to Kansas 4-0.
Kansas opened the scoring with a run in the second inning and add two more runs in the fourth and an insurance run in the sixth to hand Cal it's 15th loss of the season. Cal's record falls to 20-15 while Kansas ups its record to 14-10.
Kansas got to Melanie McCart, who took the loss. She allowed three runs - all earned - on six hits in 4 1/3 innings of work.
The Bears were unable to get any offense going and finished with just four hits - all singles.
Kansas' Sarah Workman got the win for the Jayhawks, pitching a complete-game shutout. She allowed just four hits and struck out five.
