Baseball
2006 Record: 26-28
2006 Pac-10 Finish: 9-15/9th
Cal was led on the mound by junior right-hander Brandon Morrow (7-4, 2.05 ERA, 97 strikeouts in 96.7 innings), a first-team All-Pac-10 performer who was one of 10 semifinalists for the Roger Clemens Award as the nation's top collegiate pitcher. The Bears also featured three honorable mention All-Pac-10 players: senior shortstop Allen Craig, junior center fielder Brennan Boesch and freshman right-hander Tyson Ross.

Behind All-Pac-10 performers Leon Powe and Ayinde Ubaka, Cal increased its win total seven games from the 2004-05 season and earned a No. 7 seed in the Atlanta Regional of the NCAA Tournament. Powe was named MVP of the Pac-10 Tournament after leading the Bears to the championship game for the first time. A second-team All-American, he also became just the sixth player in league history to pace the Pac-10 in both scoring (20.5 ppg) and rebounding (10.1 rpg). The Bears set a school record for the 35-second shot clock era by holding opponents to 64.5 ppg.
Women's Basketball

Under the direction of first-year head coach Joanne Boyle, Cal posted its first winning record and earned its first NCAA Tournament berth since the 1992-93 season. The Bears set school records for scoring defense (60.4 ppg, 2nd Pac-10) and field goal percentage defense (37.8%, 3rd Pac-10). Freshman guard Alexis Gray-Lawson was named the Pac-10 Freshman of the Year, and center Devanei Hampton became the 10th freshman to ever be picked All-Pac-10.

California captured the Varsity Challenge Cup with a nearly two-second victory over Princeton to give Cal head coach Steve Gladstone his 11th career national title, tying him with Charles "Pop" Courtney for most varsity eight championships in the history of collegiate racing. Overall, Cal has now claimed the 15 gold medals in the varsity eight. The Golden Bears were third each of the last three seasons before claiming the crown this year.
Women's Crew

Cal successfully defended its team national title by placing second in each of the three races at the NCAA regatta: varsity eight, second varsity eight and varsity four. The Bears tied with Brown in the final point standings, but were declared champion based on a higher finish in the varsity eight event. Cal edged Brown by just 0.261 of a second in the eights, overcoming a six-seat deficit the final 500 meters. The Bears also won the Pac-10 crown for the third straight year.

Led by Pac-10 Newcomer of the Year Mark Matusak and NCAA qualifier Giliat Ghebray, Cal finished third in the Pac-10 championships for its best result in school history. Ghebray received second-team All-Pac-10 accolades. The Bears placed eighth as a team at the NCAA West Regional and earned a national ranking as high as No. 28 after the conference meet.
Women's Cross Country

2005 Pac-10 Finish: 7th
Cal's seventh-place Pac-10 showing was its best since the Bears took sixth in 1995. Behind the leadership of redshirt junior Bridget Duffy and sophomore Rebecca Yau, Cal finished 11th at the NCAA West Regional. Duffy, a 2003 All-American, paced the Bears in four competitions in 2005, while Yau led the team at the conference championships.
Field Hockey

2005 NCAA Finish: 1st Round
Cal captured the NorPac Conference title and advanced to the NCAA Tournament, but came up short against No. 2 seed Wake Forest in the first round of the playoffs. NorPac Player of the Year Valentina Godfrid finished the season second in the nation in goals (28) and points (67). Godfrid also completed her junior campaign atop Cal's career list in goals (60) and points (147). In addition, Jessica Bird was the NorPac Defensive Player of the Year and Shellie Onstead was voted NorPac Coach of the Year.
Football
2005 Record: 8-4
2005 Pac-10 Finish: 4-4/4th
Cal finished the 2005 season ranked 25th in both national polls, marking the first time since 1950-51 the Bears have been ranked in consecutive seasons. With Marshawn Lynch rushing for 194 yards and three touchdowns and Steve Levy completing 16-of-23 passes for 228 yards and two scores, Cal defeated BYU, 35-28 in the PureVision Las Vegas Bowl. The Bears also won their fourth straight Big Game over Stanford, 27-3. Four Cal players earned first-team All-Pac-10 honors: center Marvin Philip, offensive tackle Ryan O'Callaghan, defensive tackle Brandon Mebane and cornerback Daymeion Hughes.
Men's Golf
2006 Pac-10 Finish: 7th
Despite a strong finish to the season, Cal narrowly missed an NCAA regional spot. The Bears were led by freshman team MVP George Gandranata, who tied for 16th at the Pac-10 championships and posted a team-best 73.6 stroke average, and junior Michael Wilson, who won the CordeValle Collegiate and was named the October Pac-10 Golfer of the Month. Cal also captured the team title at the fourth annual Alister MacKenzie Invitational in the fall.

2006 NCAA Finish: 5th
Cal posted its third straight top-five national showing - a feat matched by only one other school in the country (2006 NCAA champion Duke). Senior Sofie Andersson became the first three-time All-American in program history and set the school career scoring record of 74.2. Senior Sophia Sheridan joined Andersson on this year's honorable mention All-America list. The Bears finished the season with the second-best stroke average in school history (298.8).
Men's Gymnastics

2006 MPSF Finish: 3rd
2006 NCAA Finish: 5th
Led by national champion Tim McNeill, Cal finished fifth at the NCAA championships. McNeill, a sophomore, captured the pommel horse title at the NCAA meet. Fellow sophomore Colin Christ took fifth on the high bar at NCAAs, while freshman Kyson Bunthuwong placed 10th on the parallel bars at nationals. At the MPSF championships, McNeill won the all-around competition to help the Bears to a third-place standing.
Women's Gymnastics
2006 Record: 8-17
2006 Pac-10 Finish: 0-6/7th
Led by senior Britani Pittullo, the Bears welcomed 10 newcomers for the 2006 season. Cal wrapped up the regular season on a winning streak, defeating George Washington and North Carolina State in Washington, D.C., and bidding Pittullo a farewell on senior night with a win over San Jose State. Pittullo posted a career-high 39.250 in the all-around against the Spartans, helping her advance to the NCAA West Regional where she finished 11th.
Lacrosse
2006 Record: 8-11
2006 MPSF Finish: 4-1/T1st
Cal got off to a great start, upsetting then-17th-ranked Stanford, 9-6, in the Golden Bears' season opener. That win, along with strong performances from All-MPSF selections Laura Cavallo (38 goals, 13 assists, 51 points), Liz Reifsnyder (31 goals, 20 assists, 51 points) and defender Kathryn Lindler, helped the Bears capture their first share of the MPSF regular-season title. Senior Leanne Zilioli completed her college career having played the most games (73) in Cal history.
Rugby
2006 Record: 22-1
2006 National Finish: 1st
With a hard-fought 29-26 championship game victory over BYU, Cal captured its 15th national title in the past 16 seasons. Junior lock Louis Stanfill was named MVP of the tournament. The Bears rolled through the opening rounds of the playoffs, defeating UC Santa Barbara, 45-15, and Navy, 29-12, in the regional matches on Witter Rugby Field. Cal then knocked off Utah, 30-11, in the semifinals before facing a BYU team that entered the tournament as the No. 1-ranked team in the country.

2005 NCAA Finish: NCAA Elite Eight
Cal earned its fifth consecutive NCAA Tournament berth in 2005 and advanced to the Elite Eight for the first time in program history, concluding the season with a No. 9 national ranking. Senior Calen Carr was named the Pac-10 Player of the Year, while head coach Kevin Grimes earned Pac-10 Coach of the Year. Cal placed eight players on the All-Pac-10 team, and five Bears earned Pac-10 All-Academic honors. The Bears also had two NSCAA/adidas All-Americans in Carr and senior Tyson Wahl.
Women's Soccer

2005 Postseason: NCAA 3rd Round
Cal lost to Florida State, 2-1, in the third round of the NCAA Tournament, marking the first time since 1988 that the Golden Bears had advanced past the second round of the postseason. The Bears tied for the second most wins in program history and tied the school record with 14 shutouts. Kevin Boyd was selected the Pac-10 Coach of the Year, while sophomore defender Courtney Hooker earned first-team All-Pac-10 and second-team All-America recognition from Soccer Buzz.
Softball

2006 Postseason: NCAA Super Regional
The Bears finished the regular season ranked fourth nationally and earned a No. 10 seed in the NCAA Tournament. After winning its regional with a sweep of three games at Iowa, Cal lost in the Super Regional round to Oregon State in Corvallis. Senior catcher Haley Woods - the Bears all-time RBI leader - earned first-team All-America honors, while Pac-10 Pitcher of the Year Kristina Thorson, who set a school record with 36 victories, was a second-team selection for the third straight season.
Men's Swimming & Diving

Cal briefly held the top national ranking in the regular season and wound up with a No. 3 ranking at the end of the season. The Golden Bears finished sixth at the NCAA championships. Brazilian senior Henrique Barbosa ended his outstanding Cal career by winning two NCAA crowns - the 100- and 200-yard breaststrokes. He also won the 100-yard breaststroke at the Pac-10 championships.

Cal swimmers took home two individual national titles at the 2006 NCAA championships, with senior Helen Silver in the 200-yard backstroke and freshman Jessica Hardy in the 100 breaststroke, as the Bears placed fourth as a team. The finished marked the 10th consecutive Top-10 national ranking for the Bears. Cal also posted with an undefeated dual meet record for the second time in three years, including a 169-131 victory over Stanford.

Behind Pac-10 Player of the Year Conor Niland, Cal reached at least the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the sixth consecutive season and finished with a No. 21 ranking. Niland opened the campaign with 19 straight wins and posted a 26-3 overall record. He also reached the quarterfinals of the NCAA singles draw and received the Farnsworth/ITA Senior Player of the Year for the West Region.

2006 NCAA Finish: 2nd Round
Sophomore Suzi Babos defeated USC's Lindsey Nelson to win the NCAA singles title, becoming the first Cal women's player to claim the title. At the Pac-10 Tournament, junior Suzi Fodor, the 2006 Pac-10 Player of the Year, captured the conference championship with a 76-63 victory over Amanda Fink of USC. As a team, the Bears reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament with an opening 4-0 win over Western Michigan and finished with a No. 13 national ranking.
Men's Track & Field

Cal ran its winning streak over Stanford in the annual Big Meet to three years with a 95.66-67.33 victory at Edwards Stadium. Three Bears qualified for the NCAA championships with strong performances at the regional meet: Giliat Ghebray (5000 meters), Paul Tienert (javelin) and Ryan Young (javelin). Entering NCAA's, Young had the team's best throw of the year - a school freshman-record 232-10.
Women's Track & Field

2006 NCAA Regional Finish: 6th
Five members of the squad qualified for the NCAA championships, led by senior Antonette Carter, who set school records in the 100 (11.33) and 200 (22.79) meters during the season. Sophomore Alysia Johnson earned All-America honors during the indoor season with a third-place finish in the 800 meters. She broke Cal's indoor record with a time of 2:05.49 in the qualifying heats.
Volleyball
2005 Record: 19-11
2005 Pac-10 Finish: 10-8/5th
2005 NCAA Finish: NCAA 2nd round
The 2005 Cal volleyball team made a school-record fourth consecutive NCAA appearance, led by sophomore Angie Pressey, a first-team All-Pac-10 selection, and honorable mention All-Pac-10 picks Jenna Brown, Alicia Powers, Samantha Carter and Jillian Davis. Freshman Morgan Beck was a member of the Pac-10 All-Freshman team. The Bears finished 19-11 overall, 10-8 in the Pac-10, and fell to host Wisconsin in the NCAA second round. Coach Rich Feller earned his 100th win at Cal and his 400th career victory during the season.
Men's Water Polo
2005 Record: 21-7
2005 MPSF Finish: 3rd
Cal finished the 2005 campaign with a No. 3 national ranking, compiling a 21-7 record and a third-place finish at the MPSF Tournament. Junior John Mann led the Golden Bears with 56 goals and was a first-team All-American, while senior goalie Nate Bennett and sophomore attacker Michael Sharf were selected third-team All-Americans, and junior center defender Marty Matthies earned honorable mention All-America accolades.
Women's Water Polo
2006 Record: 18-9
2006 MPSF Finish: 5th
In its first season under former USA men's Olympic coach Richard Corso, Cal finished 18-9 overall and a school-record 9-3 in MPSF league play. The Bears were also an impressive 8-1 at home and placed fifth in the MPSF Tournament. Junior Elsie Windes, Cal's leading scorer with 40 goals, was selected All-MPSF first-team, while senior Katie Card was honorable mention All-MPSF and freshman Stephanie Schnugg was picked as a member of the MPSF All-Freshman squad.
