Louisville, Ky. -
The National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) announced Thursday that five Golden Bears have been selected to the NFCA’s All-Pacific Region First and Second teams, marking Cal’s highest total since 2005.
Three Elk Grove, Calif. players lead the All-Pacific First Team – senior pitcher Jolene Henderson, sophomore third baseman Danielle Henderson and senior catcher Lindsey Ziegenhirt. J. Henderson was named one of two pitchers on the team for her 1.23 ERA and 30 wins in 262.2 innings pitched. Younger sister D. Henderson owns a .287 batting average with nine home runs plus 27 runs scored and 32 RBI, starting all 53 regular-season games for the Blue and Gold. Ziegenhirt has worked her way into the Cal record books with 16 home runs this season, tied for fourth in single-season records, and 41 career home runs for fourth in the all-time records. She is batting .286 with 52 RBI and 24 runs scored.
Sophomore shortstop Cheyenne Cordes and junior utility player Victoria Jones were named All-Pacific Second Team honorees. Along with being one of Cal’s most vocal leaders, Cordes is batting .327 with nine home runs, 32 RBI and 35 runs scored. Jones has shown spectacular defensive ability at every position she has occupied – entering the lineup at catcher, first base, second base or shortstop while batting .278 with 10 home runs and 30 runs scored.
This is D. Henderson’s fourth All-Region First Team honor and the second for D. Henderson. This is the first All-Region accolade for Ziegenhirt, Cordes and Jones.
A total of 263 players from 137 different teams across the nation were selected to one of the NFCA’s 10 Division I All-Region teams. Each NFCA member coach can nominate up to six of his or her players for all-region consideration. Players are chosen by NFCA member coaches from each respective region, and all the honorees now become eligible for selection to one of three 2013 NFCA Division I All-American teams. Conference pitchers and players of the year not selected to the regional teams were also added for All-America consideration.
The 2013 NFCA Division I All-America teams will be announced at 2 p.m. PT on Wednesday, May 29 on NFCA.org.
