2012-13 CAL SEASON ARGUABLY THE BEST EVER IN COLLEGE GOLF
The 2012-13 Cal men's golf team has arguably registered the best season in the history of college golf heading into the 2013 NCAA Championship. Cal's 11 wins in its first 13 tournaments has set a modern-era NCAA single-season win record previously established by Oklahoma State in 1985-86. Cal has won outright on 10 occasions (Gopher Invitational, Pac-12 Preview, Alister MacKenzie Invitational, Isleworth Collegiate Invitational, John A. Burns Intercollegiate, Fresno State Lexus Classic, Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters, Western Intercollegiate, Pac-12 Championship, NCAA Pullman Regional) while sharing the team title with host Georgia Tech at the PING/Golfweek Preview. Not only has Cal won 11 of its first 13 tournaments in 2012-13 but when the team's record against all of the opponents in its fields is individually added up, the Bears are an astounding 177-3-1 (173-3-1 vs. Division I opponents). The three losses came to New Mexico and TCU when the Bears finished third behind those schools at the Arizona Intercollegiate and to UNLV when the Bears were second one shot behind the Runnin' Rebels at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational. The one tie happened when Cal shared the PING/Golfweek Preview title with host Georgia Tech. In their 11 tournament wins, the Bears have compiled a total margin of victory of 162 strokes for a 14.72 stroke average per win, including a season-high 37-shot win over host Fresno State at the Fresno State Lexus Classic. During the two tournaments Cal has not won, the Bears have finished a combined four shots off pace of the leaders.

AMAZINGLY SUCCESSFUL TWO-YEAR RUN
Cal has been on an amazing run going back to the beginning of the 2011-12 campaign. Cal has been victorious in 17 of its last 27 events since the beginning of 2011-12 and has finished in the top five in all 27. The Bears may have foreshadowed their 2012-13 season with a season of firsts in 2011-12 when Cal made its first trip to match play at the NCAA Championship and recorded its first NCAA match-play victory in the quarterfinals over San Diego State. Cal tied for third at the NCAA's in 2012 for its second-highest finish ever at the event after the team's lone national title in 2004. Cal also captured its first NCAA Regional and Pac-12 titles that it defended in 2013, posted a then school-record six wins (doubled the previous mark) that have since been surpassed in 2012-13, and had top-five finishes in all 14 events for the first time in school history.

HEAD COACH STEVE DESIMONE
Head coach Steve Desimone is in his 34th season at the helm of the Cal men's golf team in 2012-13 and has the Golden Bears in the NCAA Championship for a school-record fourth consecutive season, as well as the ninth time since the current NCAA Regional format began in 1988 and on the 12th occasion in school history. Desimone directed Cal to its lone NCAA title in 2004 during one of the program's 11 previous NCAA Championship appearances. Desimone also led Cal to its first NCAA Regional and Pac-12 titles in 2012 before defending both crowns in 2013 for the 54th and 55th overall tournament wins of his career. Desimone has taken a team to NCAA Regional action 18 times with a current streak of seven in a row that began in 2007 and is one shy of the school-record eight straight from 1997-2004. The 2012-13 team has established a modern-era NCAA single-season win record previously established by the 1985-86 Oklahoma State squad by winning 11 of its first 13 tournaments. Dating back to the beginning of the 2011-12 campaign, Cal has captured 17 of its last 27 events overall and has finished in the top five in all 27. Desimone has been named the Pac-12 Men's Golf Coach of the Year for each of the last two seasons for the second and third times in his career (also 1986-87 Pac-10 Co-Coach of the Year) and has had his club ranked No. 1 nationally since shortly after winning the PING/Golfweek Preview in late September of 2012. Here are some of his thoughts on ...

Qualifying for the NCAA Championship
"The goal has been to get to Atlanta from the moment we lost last year in the semis. We've accomplished that, and now we're looking forward to getting there and getting started."

Breaking the modern-era NCAA win record
"I've been doing this for 34 years and there's never been a team that's been close to this. There are a lot of reasons for it, but primarily it has happened because these guys have understood all along what was out there for us and they've worked so hard. They are the epitome of a team."

Michael Kim being the top candidate for the Haskins Award
Michael Kim should win this honor going away. There is no question that Michael should be the front runner. If anything else happens we're all going to be terribly disappointed. Michael has clearly had the best college season of any player. Michael's numbers are so overwhelming in every respect it's hard to believe that he's not going to be selected as National Player of the Year."

Cal's fourth consecutive appearance at NCAA Championship
"It's exciting stuff. When you look at the players who have been here over the last four years it is no coincidence that we've gone four years in a row. We've had a succession of really strong teams. It's a tremendous accomplishment. It is a first, but it's not going to be the last."

Cal's opportunity at the 2013 NCAA Championship
"We know what's out there, history beckons. We've already become the best team in the history of college golf. Now what we'd like to do is put an exclamation point on that and let people take some shots at it."

Cal's success in 2012-13
"Ever since we've won at the Pac-12 Championship, it has been more front and center just how historic this year has been. We can't hide from it; we're not going to hide from it."

The team's play of late
"I think the guys would agree that we weren't as sharp at the NCAA Regional as we were at Los Angeles Country Club [for the Pac-12 Championship]. I think probably our best tournament of the year was at LACC. I do think that we definitely stepped back a little bit, not totally, at the NCAA Regional. But we've been all golf since finishing up school last Thursday, and I think we will be sharper at the NCAA Championship than we were at the NCAA Regional."

The Capital City Club Crabapple Course
"We played there in the fall, we played well. It sets up very nicely for us. It's a ball-strikers golf course, it's a strong golf course. The greens are excellent. It was clear that we were comfortable with the golf course. All of us feel having played the course last fall that we have a really good game plan for the golf course and that we definitely will be ready to play."

The field at the NCAA Championship
"Holy Toledo, you can just run down the seedings. The top 10 is solid from top to bottom and then there are some really good teams in the top 20 that seem to be peaking. It's the best tournament of the season. You know what you're getting into. It's the best in college golf. We're going to have to play better than we have all year if we're going to run the table."

The match-play portion of the NCAA Championship
"Match play is its own experience in that rather than counting strokes, we're counting holes and that is a different game than stroke play at times. I really respected Texas for what they did last year as the No. 1 team in the country for most of last year, the No. 1 seed coming out of NCAA stroke-play and gping on to win the NCAA title in match play. But over the last four years, they are the only top-ranked team to do it. We know what the challenge is. If we're fortunate and good enough to advance to match play we're going to have to play well each day to put ourselves in a position to win. I don't think any of the coaches or any of the players would disagree with the fact that we are not identifying the best team. If you're going to identify the best team you're going to do it over four rounds of stroke play. Match play is a little quirky. But match play is a tradition in the sport that goes back to the very beginning of golf. That tradition has been reborn in the format that we have. That format has been endorsed. We all have to live by it and whether we like it or not, if you're going to win the championship you're going to have to play well in stroke play and win three rounds of match play. Those are the rules."

Being named the Pac-12 Coach of the Year
"It's a huge honor and gratifying to be selected by your fellow coaches. It's recognition that we've had an historic year."

Being the No. 1 team in the country
"It's great, it's fun and it has expectations. We know that we've got people that want to be a part of what's going on and knock us off, but I'd rather be in this position than anyplace else. It's a real honor to be the No. 1 team in the country, make no mistake about it, and our job is to be there at the end of the season."
