BERKELEY, Calif. - Senior Reshanda Gray registered her second double-double of the year with 17 points and 11 boards, but it was not enough to stop Louisville's second-half surge as the No. 10/10 Cardinals defeated the No. 24/23 Golden Bears, 70-57, on Sunday afternoon in front of 8,339 fans at Haas Pavilion.
Senior Brittany Boyd joined her classmate in double-figures with 11 points and added six rebounds and three assists, while first-year Gabby Green logged 10 points and pulled down six boards. Freshman Mikayla Cowling added nine points for the Bears.
Sara Hammond led the Cardinals with 18 points and nine rebounds, and another trio of Cardinals also hit double figures scoring.
Louisville took a 42-34 lead into halftime and led 46-36 with 17:38 to go in the game before Cal mounted an 8-0 run to make it a two-point game with 14:49 remaining. Unfortunately, the Bears then went nearly three minutes without a field goal, and the Cardinals were able to push their lead up to seven points, 54-47.
The Bears wouldn't get within five points the rest of the way as Louisville ran away late for the 70-57 win.
For the game, Cal shot 32 percent (19-59) from the field, 33 percent (6-18) from long range and 57 percent (13-23) from the charity stripe. Louisville connected on 45 percent (27-60) of its shots, including 54 percent (7-13) from beyond the arc and 64 percent (9-14) from the free-throw line. The Cardinals won the rebounding battle, 41-37, and held a 10-3 advantage in second-chance points.
