LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Golden Bear infielders Cheyenne Cordes, Danielle Henderson and Kylie Reed were named National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-Region selections, the NFCA announced Thursday. Cordes led the way with an All-Pacific Region first team selection, followed by Henderson on the second team and Reed on the third team.
This is Cordes’ second All-Region honor. Last year, she was voted to the All-Pacific second team. The junior from Fairfield, Calif. led the team in nearly every offensive category this season, batting .401 with 13 home runs, 13 doubles and two triples while scoring 43 runs with 40 RBI. She is among the league leaders for doubles (7th), slugging percentage (6th) and home runs (7th).
Henderson batted a career-high .345 this season with 12 homers, six doubles and a triple and led the Bears in walks (43). The Elk Grove, Calif. product ranks 10th in the country and second in the Pac-12 for walks drawn. Henderson has claimed a spot on the All-Pacific team each year she’s attended Cal, claiming first team honors in 2012 and 2013.
Reed, from Corona, Calif., logged a team-leading 64 hits in her rookie season for a .352 average and has earned the title as one of the toughest hitters in the country to strike out. She ranks eighth nationally with just five strikeouts in more than 180 at bats.
All three players were also announced as All-Pac-12 selections on Wednesday. Cordes and Henderson are members of the All-Pac-12 First Team, while Reed is an All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention and All-Freshman selection.
A total of 392 players from 158 different programs across the nation were voted to an All-Region squad. The awards honor softball student-athletes from the NFCA’s 10 regions with first, second and third teams selected for each region. The all-region teams were voted on by NFCA member coaches from each respective region, and all the honorees now become eligible for selection to one of three 2014 NFCA Division I All-American teams.
The 2014 NFCA Division I All-America teams will be announced at approximately 2 p.m. PT on Wednesday, May 28, via NFCA.org.
