Senior opposite hitter Christina Higgins was an AVCA Second Team All-American last season and a member of the 2014 Preseason All-Pac-12 Team. She also is closing in on becoming just the 16th Cal volleyball player ever to reach 1,000 kills for a career. CalBears.com sat down with Higgins to find out more about her.
CalBears.com: Why did you choose to come to Cal?
Christina Higgins: Cal gave me the best combination of academics and sports. It’s the No. 1 public university in the world and I knew they had a great program. It was the best of both worlds.
CB: What do you like best about being at Cal?
CH: I like being able to say I go to the No. 1 public university in the world.
CB: You are roommates and friends with Reshanda Gray of the women’s basketball team. What’s that like?
CH: We obviously talk about sports a lot. We go to each other’s games and she tells me when I mess up and I tell her when she messes up.
CB: Being a student-athlete at Cal is very demanding on your time. What do you like to do when you find spare time?
CH: I am on Netflix a lot. I like to go to movies. And sometimes I like just sitting outside.
CB: What is one thing people may not know about you?
CH: I don’t like Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwiches. I know that’s the classic American meal, but I don’t like peanut butter and I don’t like jelly.
CB: You are on pace to graduate in December. What are your short and long-term goals after graduation?
CH: I’d like to play overseas, beginning in January. At some point later, I’d like to go to law school.
CB: What is your favorite home-cooked meal?
CH: Ribs. They have to be home-cooked. I won’t eat them at a restaurant. They have to be my Grandma’s ribs.
CB: What is your favorite restaurant around campus?
CH: Joshu-ya. I like sushi. You’ll find me there a lot.
CB: Name one celebrity you’d like to meet.
CH: Dwight Howard. He’s really attractive and he’s obviously really good.
CB: What is one thing you’d like to learn to do?
CH: I’d like to learn to play tennis. My mom tried to teach me when I was younger but I couldn’t get it. I’d also like to become fluent in Spanish. I think that is really helpful in today’s job market.
CB: What has been your favorite class at Cal so far?
CH: Public Policy 103. It dealt with wealth and inequality. It was taught by Robert Reich and he was a very good instructor.
