BERKELEY – First Team All-Pac-12 standout guard Tyrone Wallace was voted the Most Valuable Player at the California men’s basketball awards banquet on Monday evening in a ceremony held at the University Club on campus.
The Golden Bear took home the Nibs Price MVP Award after completing his junior season as the only individual in the Pac-12 Conference to rank in the top five in points (4th, 17.1 ppg.), rebounds (5th, 7.1) and assists (5th, 4.0). He returns as the league’s active scoring leader and assist leader in 2015-16 with 1,196 career points and 313 career assists through his first three seasons. The career point total ranks 25th on the Bears’ all-time scoring list. He enters his senior season fourth among active players in the Pac-12 in career rebounds with 526.
A finalist for the Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year Award, Wallace was also selected to the National Association of Basketball Coaches and the United States Basketball Writers Association All-District team.
Wallace’s 564 points during the 2014-15 season ranked 14th on Cal’s single-season scoring list. He led the Bears in points (17.1 ppg.), rebounds (235, 7.1 rpg.), assists (131, 4.0 apg.), steals (42, 1.3 spg.) and minutes (1,148, 34.8 mpg.) this past season. He single-handedly won the game for Cal against USC at home on Feb. 5. The Golden Bear hit the game-winning three-point shot as the buzzer sounded to give the Bears the 70-69 victory.
Wallace also took home the Jason Kidd Assist Award, the Darrall Imhoff Rebounding Award and the Play Hard Award.
Senior forward David Kravish was honored with the Golden Bears’ Best Defensive Player Award. The four-year starter and two-year captain completed his career as Cal’s all-time blocks leader with 226 in his career. He ended his career fifth in Pac-12 history in career blocks and 26th in career rebounds. The forward, who played in a school-record 135 games with 125 starts, finished his Golden Bear career third in school history in all-time rebounds with 917, and 20th in all-time points, with 1,266. He ranked fourth in the Pac-12 in blocks (1.5 bpg.) and seventh in rebounding (7.0 rpg.) as a senior. Kravish is the only Golden Bear in school history with, 1,000 career points, 800 career rebounds and 200 career blocks.
Freshman Nick Hamilton was honored with the Pete Newell Coaches’ Award. The first-year guard played in five games for the Golden Bears, scoring his first collegiate points against Arizona State.
Junior Stephen Domingo and freshman Cole Welle were each honored with the Strength & Conditioning Award handed out by Strength & Conditioning Coach Nicodemus Christopher. Domingo, who is in his first season with the Golden Bears after transferring from Georgetown last season, worked out with the Bears while sitting out the 2014-15 season due to NCAA transfer rules. Welle appeared in six games for the Bears in his first season, seeing action against Alcorn State, Kennesaw State, Cal Poly UCLA, Arizona State and in the Pac-12 Tournament against Washington State. He scored his first collegiate points at UCLA.
The Bears won 18 games during the 2014-15 season, advancing to the quarterfinals of the Pac-12 Tournament in Las Vegas in their first season under head coach Cuonzo Martin.
