A first-team all-coast tackle in 1949 … known as "The Toe" for his kicking abilities … finished sixth in the nation as a junior when he hit 37 of 42 extra points … hit 39 of 46 PATS as a senior in 1949 (including 19 in a row) … set a Cal record by scoring in 25 consecutive games from 1947 to '49 and a school record with 103 conversions (125 attempts) in his career … during his three years as a letterman, Cal went 29-3 and went to the Rose Bowl his junior and senior seasons … keyed three straight victories over Stanford, kicking three conversions in Cal's 21-18 victory in '47, nailing the conversion in a 7-6 win in '48 and helping the Bears to a 33-14 rout in 1949 … was drafted by Washington in the 1959 NFL draft and played briefly with the New York Yanks in the NFL in '51 … served as a Cal assistant coach from 1964  to '71 under Ray Willsey, working primarily as the freshmen team coach … also coached under Pappy Waldorf (1950, '51 and '56), Pete Elliott in 1957, '58 and '59 and Marv Levy in 1961 … also was a standout rugby player at Cal and helped Doc Hudson coach that team upon his graduation.
