Biography

AS A JUNIOR (2018):

  • One of the Pac-12's top catchers earned All-Pac-12 honorable mention after a season in which he hit .320 with 70 hits, seven doubles, three home runs, 41 runs scored and 20 RBIs.
  • Drafted by the Chicago White Sox in the 16th round of the 2018 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.
  • Ended his Cal career with a .322 average, .398 slugging percentage and .409 on-base percentage in 112 games played. Also compiled  a .990 career fielding percentage.
  • Hit leadoff in every game for the Bears and ranked among the Pac-12's top 10 in average until the end of the season. 
  • Finished the year with nine stolen bases, good for second on the team and tied for 10th in the Pac-12.
  • Unquestionably one of the Pac-12's top defenders behind the plate with only three errors and a .991 fielding percentage. Allowed just four passed balls and threw out 16 of 38 stolen base attempts.
  • Helped guide a Cal pitching staff that dropped nearly an entire run off its team ERA from 2017 to 2018.
  • Had the team's second-longest hit streak of the season with a hit in nine straight games between March 24 and April 7.
  • Reached base safely in 28 straight games at one point in the season.
  • Second on the team in multiple-hit games with 22. Had three hits in five games (San Diego, CSU Bakersfield x2, Brown, Oregon).
  • Had a particularly strong start to the season with a batting average above .400 until March 30.
  • One of just four Bears (Vaughn, Dodson, Davis) to appear in all 54 games.
  • Ranked third on the team with an OPS (on-base plus slugging) of .807.
  • Continued to lead Cal's efforts in the classroom, earning Pac-12 All-Academic honorable mention for the second time.

AS A SOPHOMORE (2017):

  • Assumed the starting catcher role and ended the year as one of the Pac-12's top backstops after appearing in 43 games (38 starts).
  • Hit .317 with 46 hits in 145 at-bats. Also had eight doubles, one home run, 26 runs scored and 10 RBI.
  • Did quality work behind the plate as well, finishing with a .988 fielding percentage. Led the conference with 16 runners caught stealing and threw runners out at a .333 clip.
  • Ranked fourth on the team with 13 multiple-hit games.
  • Reached base safely in 10 straight games from March 24 to April 9.
  • Had perhaps his biggest offensive day of the year on April 25 at San Francisco when he went 4 for 5 with two doubles and a run scored. The performance boosted his average to .360 which placed him in the conference's top-10 at the time.
  • Had a hit in his first six games as Cal's starting catcher, including a three-hit performance against Gonzaga on March 4.
  • Earned Pac-12 All-Academic honorable mention in his first year of eligibility for the award.

AS A FRESHMAN (2016):

  • Appeared in 15 games for the Bears hitting 3-5 (.600) on the season
  • Reached base in six consecutive games played
  • Had a career high 2 runs scored on March 6 at Texas

HIGH SCHOOL/PERSONAL: 

  • Four-year letterman at St. Augustine High School in San Diego, Calif.
  • Won a gold glove from his sophomore to his senior year
  • All-Eastern League selection both his junior and senior years
  • Won the Eastern League title with the Saints his sophomore season
  • Hit .357 with six home runs, 69 RBI and 38 stolen bases during his career with the Saints
  • Earned San Diego All-Academic recognition during his junior and senior years, as well as the Distinguished Student Award at St. Augustine
  • Was awarded the St. Augustine Gold Medal for top athlete in the senior class
  • Was selected as the top catcher on the USA National Development Team
  • Has been attending Cal football games since the age of three
  • Played for the Boston Red Sox scout team during his junior and senior years of high school
