Hinnant has played in 15 career games all off the bench since his arrival at Cal in 2013, including a career-high 10 as a 2016 junior and three of the first five as a 2017 senior after playing in one each as a 2014 redshirt freshman and 2015 sophomore. Hinnant produced one of the most memorable moments of the 2016 season during his junior campaign when he caught a two-point conversion in the fourth quarter from Davis Webb against Oregon to extend Cal's lead to 42-35 with 9:20 remaining in the fourth quarter. Hinnant redshirted his first season at Cal in 2013 while recovering from serious injuries sustained in a November 2012 car accident but returned to the field in time for 2014 spring practices.
