Stovall played in 10 games with seven starts and contributed 42 receptions for 415 yards receiving (both third on the team) with three touchdown catches as a true freshman in his first season at Cal in 2016. Stovall arrived at Cal as a mid-year enrollee in January of 2016 and participated in the team's spring practices that he capped with a huge spring game with game-highs of seven catches, 128 yards receiving and two touchdown catches of 39 and 32 yards from Zach Kline. Stovall was a consensus four-star recruit who ranked as high as the No. 3 all-purpose back and No. 166 overall player in the country in the 2016 recruiting class according to 247Sports. He had an incredibly productive prep career with 7,650 all-purpose yards and 88 total touchdowns during his four varsity seasons from 2012-15. His final prep totals included 4,520 yards rushing on 466 carries and 66 touchdowns on the ground, as well as 90 receptions for 2,016 yards receiving with 15 scores. He wrapped up his prep career by earning U.S. Army All-American honors among his many accolades as a 2015 senior when he registered 1,847 all-purpose yards and was a big-play producer who tallied 14 total touchdowns and scored in five different ways (interception return, kick return, punt return, receiving, rushing). His most productive season came as a 2013 sophomore when he had career highs of 2,785 all-purpose yards and 43 total touchdowns including career bests of 2,184 yards rushing and 35 touchdowns on the ground. Stovall played on four prep teams that combined for a 37-19 overall record, won three league titles and made four appearances in the Southern Section Mid Valley Division playoffs including runner-up showings in each of his first three seasons.

• Ranked second among Pac-12 freshmen and seventh nationally with an average of 4.2 receptions per game just percentage points ahead of the 4.2 average also posted by fellow Cal rookie wide receiver Demetris Robertson, while his 42 overall receptions were fourth in the conference and 14th nationally
