The tallest player in school history and a big crowd favorite, Zhang signed with the Bears in late August 2007 ... redshirted during his initial year on campus ... began playing basketball at age 15 ... still developing physically, he is a skilled athlete with the ability to alter games with his shot-blocking skills ... played for China in the World University Games in the summer of 2009 and recorded outstanding numbers in six games played that included - two triple-doubles, led all tournament players with a 17.3 rpg and 5.6 bpg, seventh in scoring at 18.0 ppg including a 25-point outing and a 21-point performance, recorded 22 rebounds in two contests and averaged 34 minutes played per game.

As a Freshman (2008-09): Participated in 15 games for the Bears ... his 13 blocks was second on the squad ... in his first collegiate contest in the season opener vs. Pacific, scored a season-best five points and grabbed a season-high three rebounds ... swatted away three shots in the second half vs. North Carolina A&T and three more in the first half at UNLV ... also had a steal against the Rebels ... averaged 1.3 ppg and 0.6 rpg.
High School: Zhang was selected to China's high school all-star team after averaging 23.5 ppg, 13 rpg and 6 bpg in the CIAA Chinese League ... played in both Nike and adidas camps in China ... one of seven players chosen out of the adidas camp to travel to a camp in the United States, making his first visit to the country with a trip to Atlanta in the summer of 2005 ... graduated from high school in 2006 and returned to the U.S. in 2006 to study at the American English Academy in Monterey Park, Calif. ... played for the California Supreme AAU team, ranking third in both rebounds (43) and blocks (10) at the Cactus Classic in May 2007 ... also played briefly with the LA Impact AAU team in the summer of '07.
