Academic Support Coordinator Christopher Oakes joined Wyking Jones' staff in May 2017 and begins his second season at Cal in 2018-19.
Among his duties assisting in day-to-day operations for the men’s basketball program, Oakes uses a rich background in education to oversee the Golden Bears’ academics and tutoring, as well as their community service efforts.
The Oakland, Calif. native is a state credentialed educator in Public Health at his alma mater, Castlemont High School, where he has proved comprehensive classroom instruction, developed lesson plans and initiated classroom discussions on on global and national public health issues.
He has also served as a substitute teacher in the Monterey Unified School District and has dedicated his professional career to mentoring and serving young people, assisting at the Youth Uprising Community Center in Oakland in 2013 as a career coach and general education development instructor.
Oakes transferred to San Jose State from Pepperdine University in 2006, where he enjoyed a standout career as the starting center for the Spartans from 2008-10. He finished his San Jose State career second among program leaders in blocked shots and eighth in rebounds, collecting 661 boards. He received his Bachelor of Arts in African American Studies with a minor in Communications in 2010.
Following his career at San Jose State, Oakes played professional basketball with the Mittleduescher Basketball Club (MBC) in Germany from 2010-12.
Oakes added a Master’s of Arts in Education and a California State Teaching Credential from UC Santa Cruz in July 2016.
