Yu spent two seasons at Cal as a true freshman in 2015-16 and a redshirt freshman in 2016-17. Yu saw all of his action at Cal in the spring of 2017 when he played in six of the team's seven stroke-play events and finished with the team's third-highest national Golfweek/Sagarin ranking at No. 625. Yu arrived at Cal in the fall of 2015 as a true freshman following a stellar junior career that included a trip to match play at the 2013 U.S. Amateur. He also qualified for the U.S. Junior Amateur and won a pair of Toyota Tour Cup events in 2014, was tied fourth at the Los Angeles City Championship in 2015 and captured the Santa Clara County Amateur in 2016.
