Hughes became arguably Cal's most consistent player behind Division I PING First-Team All-American Collin Morikawa as a 2016-17 sophomore, playing in 10 of the team's 11 events and 30 of 33 possible rounds to rank second behind Morikawa in both categories. He also posted the team's second-highest Golfweek/Sagarin national ranking (No. 501) behind Morikawa and third-best stroke average among regulars behind Morikawa and Finigan Tilly. Hughes had played in just one event during his first two seasons with the program when he made his collegiate debut playing as an individual at the Nick Watney Invitational in the fall of 2015 after redshirting his first season at Cal in 2014-15. Hughes has three notable amateur victories most recently in January of 2017 at the Saguaro Amateur after two wins in 2014 when he became the first player to ever capture AmateurGolf.com titles at both the Christmas Classic and Tour Championship presented by Callaway Golf in the same calendar year and subsequently captured AmateurGolf.com Player of the Year honors. He also played in the 2016 U.S. Amateur.

Cal Coaches On Tanner Hughes

He hits lots of fairways and greens, and he’s one of the best putters on the team.
