Matt Martinez served on the California men's swimming & diving coaching staff as a volunteer assistant coach for the 2021-22 season and helped lead the Golden Bears to the 2022 NCAA championship. He left Cal following the conclusion of the 2021-22 season when he joined the Wisconsin swimming and diving program as an assistant coach on June 3, 2022.
Martinez spent time working with each of Cal's training groups throughout the 2021-22 season, including individual NCAA champions Hugo González (400 individual medley) and Destin Lasco (200 backstroke). The Bears additionally won the NCAA title in the 400 medley relay and totaled 487.5 points to best the field by a 51-point margin at the four-day meet in Atlanta, Georgia. Cal totaled 49 All-American swims at the NCAA Championships and additionally captured its fifth consecutive Pac-12 Conference championship with Martinez's guidance.
Martinez gained experience with three additional Division I programs, most recently spending the 2019-20 season as an assistant coach with the Warringah Aquatic Swim Club in New South Wales, Australia. Prior to that, Martinez served as an assistant coach at Binghamton University (2018-19), a volunteer assistant at Notre Dame (2017-18) and a graduate assistant at Saint Louis University (2015-17).
Martinez earned his bachelor of arts degree from Arizona State in 2014 and completed his master of arts from Saint Louis University in 2017.
