Ann Detmer, a former MVP for the Wisconsin track & field team who helped the Badgers qualify for three NCAA Women's Cross Country Championships, is entering her third year as an assistant coach for the California cross country program.

During her first two years at Cal, both the men's and women's programs recorded record-breaking seasons. In 2009, the Cal women placed fifth at the Pac-10 Championships, their highest finish in 21 years, led by Deborah Maier (6th), who had the best showing by a Golden Bear woman individual in 12 years. The women ended the season with a No. 27 national ranking in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association's poll.

In 2010, both the men's and women's squads held top-25 national rankings throughout the majority of the season. The women again took fifth at the Pac-10 meet while the men matched their highest finish ever with a third-place standing. At NCAA West Regionals, the men placed third - best in school history - and the women were fifth, their best showing since 1988. They were led by Michael Coe (3rd) and Deborah Maier (2nd), respectively.

The success continued into the indoor and outdoor track & field seasons with several distance athletes earning All-America honors in 2010 (Michael Coe 3000m and DMR; Mark Matusak 3000m, DMR and 1500m; Deborah Maier 5000m; Steve Sodaro 3000m steeplechase; Sebastian Sam DMR). Nine of the runners Detmer coached qualified for NCAA West Preliminary Rounds in 2010 and eight more in 2011. In addition, Maier set school indoor marks in the 3000 and 5000 meters in '10, with Rowena Tam breaking the school mark in the 3000-meter steeplechase this past season.

Detmer previously served as a volunteer coach with the women's team at Wisconsin in 2008, where she assisted with training and individual workouts and coordinating recruiting efforts. In cross country, the Badgers finished second at the Big Ten meet and placed 19th at the 2008 NCAA championships. Detmer helped coach distance runners to three All-Big Ten honors in cross country, as well as two Big Ten track & field titles (3000m, 5000m). In addition, Gwen Jorgensen garnered All-America notice at the 2008 NCAA cross country meet.

Captain of the 2007-08 Wisconsin cross country and track & field squads, Detmer earned All-America honors with an eighth-place finish in the mile at the 2008 NCAA indoor meet. She was a three-time NCAA qualifier in the mile and 1500 meters. In cross country, Detmer was part of three NCAA qualifying teams, helping the Badgers to a best of fourth place at 2006 nationals. In 2007, she received the cross country squad's Most Improved Award.

As a high school runner, Detmer won the Wisconsin state championship in the 800 meters competing for Lodi High School. Detmer earned her bachelor's degree in biology from Wisconsin and was a two-time Academic All-American and three-time Big Ten All-Academic selection. She has worked as an associate research specialist with the O'Connor AIDS Vaccine Lab and the Wisconsin National Primate Research Center Genetic Services Unit. Detmer has co-authored three manuscripts that have been published the Journal of Virology, Immunogenetics and Nature Medicine.
