Chris Smith will enter his fifth season as a volunteer assistant coach in the 2018-19 school year. Smith primarily works with the pole vaulters at Cal.
Under Smith's tutelage, All-American Lauren Martinez came into her own during the 2018 track & field season. Martinez set the school record in the pole vault during both the indoor and outdoor seasons and earned Second Team All-America honors in both. During the outdoor season, Martinez leaped 4.30m/14-1.25 at the NCAA Championships to take 11th place. Martinez won both the Pac-12 and MPSF Championships in the pole vault. As a sophomore, Martinez earned a bronze medal at the Pac-12 Championship.
