Scott Slover, a former pole vault star for UCLA, is in his fourth year as Cal's pole vault coach. During his first three years with the Bears, he has coached both an NCAA champion (Katie Morgan, 2008) and the Cal freshman record-holder (Allison Stokke).
A history major who graduated from UCLA in 1999, Slover was a five-time All-American who took third at the 1998 NCAA outdoor meet and fifth at the 1996 NCAA outdoor championships in the pole vault. Competing indoors, he placed seventh in 1996, sixth in 1997 and seventh in 1998. Once ranked as high as fifth in the world in the pole vault, Slover served as an assistant coach with the Bruins in 1999.
Slover was a two-time Pac-10 champion in the pole vault in 1996 and 1998 and finished his collegiate career ranked second in the UCLA record books with a clearance of 18-7.25. He also set the school freshman record with a mark of 18-0.25 in 1995. In addition, took ninth at the World Junior Championships in the event in 1994.
As a coach, Slover has trained UCLA's Tracy O'Hara, who won the women's pole vault titles at the NCAA indoor and outdoor meets in 2000 and at the 2002 NCAA outdoor championships.
Slover comes from strong track and field lineage, as his father, Bob Slover, competed in the 1968 and 1972 Olympics in the pole vault. The father-son duo has the second-best combined height in the world at 36-5.25. Bob Slover coached his son at Leland High School in San Jose, Calif., where Scott Slover was a two-time high school state champion.
The former Bruin has occasionally worked in television commercials, portraying a pole vaulter in ads for companies that include Nike, DHL and SBC.
