Lou Kinder is entering her second season as an assistant coach for the Cal women's rowing team, having previously served as a volunteer coach for the 2011 and 2016 seasons.
Kinder, a 2009 graduate of Cal, was a star rower for the Golden Bears and put together a noteworthy collegiate resume. During her time on the rowing team, she helped the Bears to an NCAA Championship and three Pac-10 championships. Rowing in the Varsity 8 starting in her sophomore year, Kinder earned All-American honors in 2009 and served as team captain her junior and senior years.
Along with her athletic accomplishments, Kinder thrived in the classroom as well, named a CRCA National Scholar Athlete from 2007-2009. She received the Achievement Award for highest GPA on Rowing Team in 2008 and 2009 and was a Pac-10 Scholar Athlete of the Year Nominee her senior year. After graduating with a degree in English Literature, Kinder continued to row on the Pocock and Potomac elite sculling teams.
Before returning to Cal to coach, Kinder, who holds a Master of Arts in English Literature from Middlebury College, taught high school English for five years, including at the The College Preparatory School in Oakland. A native of Shaker Heights, Ohio, Kinder coached a variety of sports at the high school level including ice hockey, field hockey, track, and rowing.
