Dani Holmqvist Wins First Symetra Tour Championship

BERKELEY – Former Golden Bear Dani Holmqvist won her first career Symetra Tour title after claiming the Island Resort Championship by one stroke at the Sweetgrass Golf Club in Harris, Mich.

Holmqvist sank a putt for par on her final hole to avoid a playoff and claim the title with a 67-69-70=206 (-10) and move to 13th on the latest Volvik Race for the Card Money List. The top 10 players on the list at the end of the season automatically earn their LPGA cards.

“I saw the leaderboard and I knew that I had to make it in order to not go to a playoff,” Holmqvist explained. “I've been actually practicing those kinds of putts back in my home course in Jupiter. I end every practice by saying 'if I make this putt I'll win the tournament' and ironically that's what happened today.”

The Cal grad led off the tournament in first place at the 6,286-yard, par-72 course with her opening round 67 but dropped to second place after her second round 68. Entering Sunday's final round one stroke behind Anne-Catherina Tanguay, Holmqvist claimed the win with her final putt to keep her hopes alive for an automatic qualification for her LPGA card. The Island Resort Championship was the 12th of 23 events on the tour schedule.

“For me, ultimately I want to play on the LPGA Tour and I think the Symetra Tour is the only way to get there outside of Q School,” Holmqvist said. “The schedule is really great here. For me, as a fairly new pro I just need to play a lot of tournaments and the Symetra Tour has 23 events this year.”

Next up for Holmqvist is the inaugural Tullymore Classic that will be held July 3-5 at the Tullymore Golf Club in Stanwood, Mich.

“It feels great right now,” Holmqvist said after winning her first Symetra Tour event. “It still hasn't quite sunk in but it's very exciting.”
