Sacramento State at California Postgame Quotes
Dec. 6, 2015 | Haas Pavilion | Berkeley, Calif.
Head Coach Lindsay Gottlieb
On the game:
“Pretty fun to bounce back with a win. We talked a lot last night, and while you guys go home and prepare for the next game, we live this, and we look at the same group of girls everyday and we are really proud of them for taking a tough loss, dealing with it, resolving to be better and playing their tails off today. It's just one game, but we showed a lot of toughness and heart. We talked a lot about shooting a high percentage, and obviously we did that. Kristine (Anigwe) was ridiculous in her finishing, but I'm also proud of Kayla (Mikayla Cowling) and Gabby (Green) and Courtney (Range) and Asha (Thomas) who were all so unselfish and got the ball where it needed to go. We gave up too many points and turned over the ball too much. I was more looking at how our team was going to respond emotionally and mentally and I think we passed that test. Looking forward to the next week where the girls study for finals and basketball. This team is about growth, because they are so young and I just want to keep moving forward with them.”
On recovering from the loss against Saint Mary's:
“I think we are growing. Because we're so young, we keep looking at them as coaches and saying 'This is what we need from you, and we need you to do this.' I think they've always been with us, but they're learning to lock in better and we really challenged them last night in a lot of ways, and they understood what the game plan was going to be against Sac State and it really fit well with our personnel. We did a really good job of getting the ball where it needed to go. Overall, we are growing up a little bitand I tell them again and again that we should be the team that grows the most before conference play because we have the most room to grow.”
On Kristine's record-breaking performance:
“I'm really proud of her. She's such an unselfish player and today she did what she needed to do. That is directed to Kristine, but also our shooting percentages were great and I think we did a really great job after having such a tough time yesterday. I thought they really bounced back (from the loss).”
Junior Forward Mikayla Cowling
On the challenge from coaches:
“After the loss, I went inside myself and asked myself what I could have done better, and what more I could have given to the team. She (Lindsay Gottlieb) hit a lot of points, asking us to do certain things, and we did them. It's all about taking what she has to say and internalizing them, then talking to not only the coaches but our teammates about them, trying to move forward in a positive way.”
Freshman Forward Kristine Anigwe
On her record-breaking performance:
"I'm excited, and I'm just proud of my teammates because without my teammates, I wouldn't have gotten 43 points. I'm just really grateful that I have such unselfish teammates who believe in me."
