BERKELEY - Despite losing its starting goalie to a red card in the 60th minute, the Cal women's soccer team pulled out a 2-1 victory over the Tennessee Lady Volunteers today at Edwards Stadium.
Freshman Lee Ann Morton, Cal's fourth-string goalkeeper, entered the game when Maite Zabala was red-carded for a dangerous play at the 59:10 mark. The 5-foot-6 Morton, who is listed as a forward/midfielder and has never been a first-string goalie at any level of soccer, made four saves and stopped several Lady Vols crossing attempts to preserve the victory.
"Obviously we're disappointed about losing Maite, but Lee Ann really stepped up and helped us get a win in a very difficult position," said Cal coach Kevin Boyd. "Lee Ann deserves the game ball today."
Morton was forced into action because backup Jill Stephenson is out for the year with a torn right ACL, and third-stringer Gabby Ronick suffered a concussion and was not cleared to play in Friday's game.
Cal went ahead in the 48th minute when Natalie Stuhlmueller lofted in a long shot from a difficult angle for her first goal of the year. The Bears put on the defensive clamps when they had to play one player down for the rest of the game, but they got a break late when Tennessee was caught without their defense in position. Midfielder Kim Brown streaked down the right side and found Laura Schott in the box. Schott trapped the ball and calmly lofted it past Tennessee keeper Ellen Dean to make it 2-0 with only 1:30 remaining. Schott leads the Bears with 8 goals and 20 points.
The Vols came right back with a goal from Kelly Berrall on a 35-yard shot a minute later, but their comeback fell short.
The game was part of the Golden Gate Classic, co-hosted by Cal and the University of San Francisco. Cal hosts Duke at 1 p.m. Sunday at Edwards Stadium in their final Classic matchup.
